    Build a 1911 on a CNC

I have a buddy with a CNC 4-axis mill in his garage that he runs custom jobs on. He in an excellent machinist. The other day I half jokingly mentioned that he should build 1911 frames for cash. Is it legal to produce gun parts? I assume that since there are so many 1911 (non colt, patten expired) pistols out there, there wouldnt be any copy right infringements?

He can get the appropriate FFL and become a manufacturer. Or he can make one for himself without it. As soon as it's a commercial enterprise there are licensing requirements. Probably at your State level as well.

So if he were to build one (not for resale) he could do it legally? Where could he find design drawings?

That part I can't help you with (finding plans).

Not everything can be done on a CNC machine. IIRC, Caspian told me that the mag well (channel) is done with a broaching system and Ruger does the mag well for Caspian slides.
