I always thought that metal targets would be nice to use for the fact that you can use them over, and over again... Until I watched something on YOUTUBE. If you want to see this video go to YouTube.com and search ONE IN A MILLION SHOT.. Click on the link for 50cal. at 1000 yards. You will think about useing metal targets after you see this...

Yeah... you shouldnt just shoot at some steel. It needs to swing or be angled properly to be safe.

I shoot some 8 and 12 inch steel plates. I do not shoot inside 15 yards, and always turn the plates at a slight angle to keep the bullet from coming straight back.

We use steel targets for our 3-gun competitions, haven't heard of this happening there yet. But ours are the kind that once you hit them, they knock down and you have to go over (after the range is cleared) and re- set them up again. Is that the same kind this guy was using in the video? Or was he shooting something else entirely? I couldn't tell from the video.

I dont believe it was a target that falls. thats like shooting at a steel target with a .45 thats 3 feet in front of you.

Speaking of metal targets!!! A HMR17 will go clear through a spinner for .22LR. I found this out personally after thinking that 'hey it is a .17 should be no problem'...I was wrong.
That damn .17 is a nasty little round

I think it's just like a lot of things. If you use it properly, your fine. If you abuse it or don't respect the tools you are using you are going to get hurt or worse.

If I remember, they were shooting at a piece of steel plating, set against a backstop (dirt mound) flat in respect to the shooter. They had expected the round to penetrate the steel, but apparently their expectations were not met....

Make sure the steel plates are flat with no indentations that can cause a ricochet back at ya and only shoot with lead bullets, copper jacket coming back at you can cut skin
