New Zealand - New laws today affecting firearms owners

Well we have come another step closer today to confiscation. As of today any rifle or shotgun that has a pistol style grip or thumbhole type grip is now classed as a Military Style Semi Automatic (MSSA).

Previously to be classed as an MSSA it also had to have mag capacity greater than 10 rounds, but now its been extended to all rifles and shotguns that have this type of grip.

What does this mean for the 10,000 or so owners of rifles or shotgun ???

    - $1000 per owner to apply for a new licence with correct endorsement, and upgrade their storage to meet requirements.

Remington 597TVP .22 and Ruger 10/22 USST are now classed as MSSA which highlights the stupidity of this rule change.

It is so sensless to restrict a gun based on the shape of the stock.

They will never come for your hunting rifle. They will classify it a sniper rifle first.

Sorry to hear how bad things are down there.

Not too bad for us pistol owners yet as our storage requirements already meet the high standard required for MSSA (6mm lock smith approved safe). And we have gone through all the police interviews to get our pistol endorsement on our licence etc + each of our firearms are registered specifically to us.

But who knows it could be the gateway to more rules for us pistol people such as magazine capacity restrictions, limit on amount of ammo that can be purchased each transaction, licence required for reloading, and making us attend certain number of competitions per year in order to keep our endorsed licence.

Again all these things targeted at law abiding pistol owners and have nothing to do with criminals using high powered airguns and stolen weapons to kill police officers.

I believe Retsupt99 has said it best.

$1000 for a new license because of it's style of stock?!?!

I know you said that as of right now it doesn't affect you since you only own handgun(s), and I hope it at least stays that way. Good luck, sounds like you'll need it.

I think I'd rather just switch to a conventional stock instead of having to comply with all those additional requirements, but that's just me.

    +1

$1000 for paperwork or $100 for a cheap drop in stock? I go with $100.

The police now know where all the guns are when the time comes to confiscate them. What did I hear about Iran....the demonstrators had only rocks to defend themselves with.

    UPDATE Today:

Well its stil bad but not too bad.

    - Police have decided to waive the $200 fee required to get special licence E endorsement.
    - No one who currently holds these firearms legally will be denied an E-CAT licence
    - People have until July 2010 to comply, no buy back scheme.

Only cost for people will be storage upgrade (6mm steel safe) to hold Ecat rifles. So about $600 - $800. But beefier storage is a good thing, anything that makes it harder for BG to get your firearms is good.

The thing that annoys me is the reason this rule came about, not because these weapons were deadlier but just because some government gimp decided that thumbhole stocks were rambo looking.

The fact our support arm COFOL (equivalent to your NRA) rolled over and accepted the rules annoys me as a pistol shooter becuase this is one step closer to handgun bans or perhaps caliber restrictions limiting us to .22 pistols only.

We have some that we'll sell cheap. Heck, we have a whole legislature that many Californians would give away just to get them out of here! Last time I checked, our legislature had a whopping 14% voter approval. They might be overqualified...

I think I would have a hard time not just 'snapping'

I feel a twitch coming on just thinking about it
