    1897/1903 Colt 32 Auto Smokeless/Rimless - Value?

    Hey Everyone,

A good friend of mine was gifted this gun from a friend of his who was a rather old gentleman. He would like to know it's value, could any of you help me figure out what it's worth? It's pretty old, the finish is somewhat ugly, and there is a chip on the left grip as you can see. The gun is in working condition albeit it looks a bit grimey/dirty ( I have no idea how to tear it down, neither does he).

Anyway any idea what it's worth? The goal is to sell it to buy a modern 9mm for carry purposes, or to trade it directly for one. Is this actually worth something or it's just an old piece of junk due to its condition?

    Thanks!

I certainly would not classify it as "junk". All it needs is some TLC. Cleaning it up would enhance its value. That gun is a piece of history. I saw one in a gun shop that had factory nickle plating but was otherwise identical selling for $300.00.
If I lived nearby, I'd give you $300.00. Put an ad in the paper, I'm sure some collector will snap it up. Go to the web site m998.com for disassembly instructions.

It is actually a desirable Browning designed Colt Model 1903 .32 ACP. It's a finely made little pistol and considered to be very reliable. That particular one was made in 1920.

Someone's harsh method of cleaning it off with sandpaper did it more harm than did the rust spots that were on it. With the chipped grip and remaining finish it is probably worth $225-$275.

To properly clean its surfaces, soak it in Kroil for a day or so then carefully use a bronze brush on it.
