Police arrest 'weapons expert' in Portsmouth shooting
Police this afternoon arrested a 42-year-old “weapons expert” considered armed and dangerous after a Sunday morning shooting that left one man hospitalized in serious condition.
The 41-year-old victim, whom police didn’t name, drove himself to Portsmouth Naval Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds, said Detective Jan Westerbeck, police spokeswoman, in a release today.
The suspect, identified as Bruce Edward Reese of the 70 block of King George Quay in Chesapeake, surrendered to police after seeing news that he was being sought, Westerbeck said.
A shooting was reported about 8:21 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of Sedgewyck Circle. Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the victim was staying with three others in a residence there. A man confronted the victim in the front yard, they argued and the victim was shot.
More shots were fired at him as he drove away toward the hospital, and then inside the residence before the shooter drove off, police said. None of the three inside the residence was reported hurt.
Police said the incident appeared to be related to a domestic situation.
Reese's family told police he had extensive training in firearms, plus military experience, Westerbeck said.
