For me, it comes down to which has reasonable substitutes. One is a news-gathering machine. The other is a defensive tool. Could I find alternative sources of news? Could I find alternative defensive tools?
"Finger and a phone." They are poor substitutes in a bad situation.
If down to my last stitch of clothing, I still would be able to defend myself and perhaps feed myself with a firearm, but lacking a television I would be saving on electricity bills and could easily ask a neighbor for the news. Of course, explaining the "stitching" (or lack thereof) would take some doing.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.

I say dump the T.V.! I usually fall asleep when I watch it anyways. I've never fallen asleep when I'm shooting. Of course if this had to happen I would need a bunch of you guys to come over and help explain this to my wife. I know I do not want to have to do that by myself.

Since the conversion to digital TV, I have not yet bothered to get a converter box. I don't miss the TV.
