AOW, SBR, SBS permit
Would like to hear from someone
that actually has one of these permits
and weapons if possible.
What is the exact process to obtain such
a permit? Where do you get a form?
How strict are the Feds on these permits?
Do they ask why you want such a weapon?
Does a misdemeanor disqualify someone?
I get people asking me some questions about
this topic around town but actually have never
talked to someone that went through the process.
Thanks for the help

Went through the process about three years ago. Basically you fill out the paperwork (provided to me by the dealer) pony up the bucks and WAIT. It took about 6 months for me to get the go-ahead.
Strict? I wanted to bring my Class Three to another state next week, but found out that you must notify the BATFE of intentions to do so and maybe in a month or so they will give you permission to do so.
Lots of luck.
Do I regret it....HECK NO! I really get a kick out of shooting it.

Ok. What about if you are turning a pistol into
a AOW or SBR. Want to get a permit for my PLR-16
AR pistol so I can put a Stock and/or pistol grip forend
who would I see then about a permit and get the paperwork from?

I am curious if anyone here in Washington State has went through the AOW process and how long it took. The tax stamp is the cheap part, but I have always been curious on how it works.

There is no permit. You, your corporation, or your trust pay a tax on the transfer or manufacture. Of all the opttions, the trust is probably the best option. IF you can legally purchase a firearm, you may own a AOW, SBR, suppressor, etc. I can't find right now the Form 4, but if you want to make your own SBR, as in bolting a stock onto your PLR here's an updated Form 1:

All forms are also available from the ATFE, too.
You are manufacturing it yourself, and there are required markings. Look on the ATFE website, but it's not hard. Most around here get their engraving done at Things Remembered at the local mall. You can get a trust made up online, from your lawyer or tax person, using Quicken Willmaker, or some kits can be found at Office Depot and the like. My employer has some free legal services online and a Trust is one of them. Your employer may do a similar thing. If you want to make your pistol into an AOW, by adding a foregrip for example, you must pay $200 to manufacture it. If you were to buy one with the grip from a dealer, it would cost you a $5 transfer. It don't have to make sense, it's The Man.
It's addicting.

From what I understand about the process, the hardest part is getting the chief of police or county sheriff to sign off on it before you send the app to the BATFE. If where you live allows what you're looking to transfer or build, the BATFE is going to cash your check or money order. Not like they don't want the money, you know? Lol
It still bothers me that suppressors require that stupid tax stamp though. I'd like to be able to go shooting without disturbing the neighbors AND without breaking the bank AND having to wait half a year for permission to do it.

I knew you had to get the police chief to sign for a class 3
but didnt know he had to sign for a AOW or SBR.
Heard the chief in my county has never approved a Class 3
request.

AOWs and SBR's are class 3.
Oh--and forgot to add--I desire to build a SBR, and am filling out a Form 1; then, just need to get together with CLEO and get his blessing (fingers crossed!).

good luck guess I am probably out
of luck on this issue if the rumors are
true that the CLEO in my county has
never approved them.

Well, you'll never know until you try J Bowen. Sometimes rumor are false, you know? And besides, if he doesn't sign you're only out a little bit of your time, and if he does sign off on it, you're on your way to getting your tax stamp.

The Chief LEO doesn't have to be the local sheriff or chief of police. ATF will accept a signature from the District Attorney, a US Marshall, a state Attorney General or the commander of the State Police. Anyone with jurisdiction over your place of residence. They might even accept the AIC of the local FBI office.
This step is purely political, ATF knows which states allow class III weapons, and which don't.

Another way to obtain a NFA weapon (no such thing as a Class 3 weapon nor a permit to get one) is to form a trust or corporation. No CLEO signature is needed for a corp or trust. The trust is becoming more popular for NFA collectors. Do NOT use software to make a NFA trust. Use a lawyer versed in NFA law. Your SOT dealer should be able to give a reference.
