Today, I'm packing up to leave the range (I'm finally mastering the snubbie) and I notice an very old, frail gentleman come in, walking painfully with a cane in one hand and a gun bag in the other. I tried to be discreet as I watched him set the cane aside, lock his crooked knees into a braced A-frame stance, pull out what sounded like a 10mm cannon and proceed to drill the center out of the target. I'm talking one shot right on top of the other. It made my 4" grouping next to his just look sloppy. This man was bad to the bone. Ya don't mess with ol' folks!

I then come back to my local news and see this:

Isn't that cool.. :-) Probably been shooting all his life and keeping in practice is important to him.. That is awesome... :-)

I like the score, nothing is better when than when the good guys(or gals) win.

I would have spoken with him. I love the knowledge that our elders have. What they have experienced is usually really fascinating. Plus, I don't know of any greater compliment to a person than to be genuinely interested in them and the knowledge they have to offer.

I know of written of him here before, but there is a similar guy that range that I worked at. Actually, there were a few of them.
But this guy in particular was wicked. He'd come in on bowling pin night, hobble on out to a table pull out a well worn (OK ragged looking) model 36 or sometimes a equally worn 60, and in one smooth wave of his hand, five quick shots and 5 pins spinning on the floor. He'd put his gun away, and hobble back out collecting his money on the way out. He'd do the same with an 870 on shotgun night.

Yup. A golden opportunity to (a) express (through your watchful silence) respect and gratitude for a life lived well, and to (b) learn a little bit about where he comes from and how he came to be such an excellent shot. You're likely to have as much quality stuffed into a half-hour as is possible to have.

Yes it sometimes amazes me to see what you observed.
Some are naturals and some are highly trained and skilled.
Shooting is like golf, you can keep it up as long as you maintain health.
