With the recent price rise in ammo and the occasional unavailability of it, I decided to do something that made lots of sense.
I broke down and bought a the new Colt M-4 .22 which is basically an AR clone that is a dedicated 22 built from the ground up. For those that aren't aware of it, heres a pretty good writeup with lots of pictures, so I wont waste time duplicating it.
Coltís New .22 Long Rifle M-4 Carbine
So far, with a bit less than a 550 round box through it, I can say is that its lots of fun. So much fun in fact, that it is really hard on ammo. The .30 round mag that comes with it is easy to load, my biggest gripe is that it just doesn't last long enough.
Since I believe that ANY semi- auto needs more than one mag, I went ahead and bought another. I was surprised just how fast one could put two mags through this gun, all with out fail.
The nice thing is that it is accurate. Very accurate. I put an el cheapo Chinese read dot scope on it and the first group at 25 yards was one ragged hole.
After adjusting point of impact on the scope, the next group at 50 was less than an inch, but this was with a full mag of 30 shots.
I'm seriously considering putting a 3x9 Scope on it and taking it to the squirrel woods. Think of the look on the local game warden when he sees that! Since I know him well I can hardly wait.
For training purposes I think it'll see a lot of range use. For the most part the operation is the same as any AR, other than the mag release not working, its just there to look pretty.
It's close enough to the real thing that most people will never notice that it is not. About the only give away is the ejection port and the slot in the mag if you leave it in. Best of all...its cheap to shoot, will hit whatever you aim at it, recoil is slim to none and it has a maximum cool factor.
It doesn't get any better than that.
