New AR15 Owner, Have questions.

So Ive aquired a new DTI AR15, 16"cromo barrel, 6 position collapsable stock and alot of other upgrades that the original owner did to this weapon. I've always wanted one since getting out of the army but really could never justify paying the 1500 for one. I paid 400 for this one and its never been fired and hasw receipts for the build which total 1900... anyways, I have a few questions regarding the potential gun ban good ole osama (as i like to call him!!) is proposing.
I wont pretend that im a very political person so I have to ask, what effect would this ban have on me as an exsiting AR15 owner?
Will I be hassled when I take it out shooting by the forest rangers? (given that we are and always DO shoot responsibly!!)

I love this weapon and ever since I first touched my issue M16A2 in the US Army I knew this was my choice weapon. I dont want to have to lose it cause of this whack job that is in office. Thanks for your help guys, its appreciated!!

Well I'm not going to go into the sky is falling routine or whatever, but if such a bill were to be passed, it would most likely include a grandfather clause that allows you to keep your rifle if you already own it before the ban, and people just can't buy new ones.

If it just outright banned them and said you had to give them up, hope ya live in a state that doesn't require registration of rifles.

LOL the sky is fallin, that makes me laugh!

ANyways yeah, Oregon doesnt require it and Ill be dead honest, I own 7 other weapons all in my name, 2 I bought privately and had transfered to my name at a gun dealer. Im fairly apprehensive if I want to transfer this one into my name with the FFL or not.. I do have legal paperwork documenting the sale so proving my ownership of this weapon now. Im just kinda thinking "is it better if only I and ONLY I know I own this weapon?"

The only paperwork you should have on a rifle is the DROS (Dealer record of sale). If registration is optional, and not mandatory, DONT do it! I don't want anyone but me to know what weapons I own for the most part. The DROS doesn't mean the rifle belongs to you, only that it was originally sold to you. When you sell the rifle, you're not required to do any paperwork if it is a face to face, in state sale.

When the knock on the door comes, I don't own any rifles ;)

Don't know how things are in OR, but here you'll see everything including full auto at the public USFS range.

Shot Thompsons, AKs, and M4.

Never been hassled, never seen anyone else hassled.

The only hassled I heard of here in Virginia re: an AR is that they are not legal for deer hunting, here.

Stock up on magazines!

As we saw with the first, and hopefully last ban, magazines are one of the most effective ways to render a firearm less than ideal. It's no use having something that takes a thirty round magazine if all you can load it with are ten round magazines.

I wish politicians would listen to their constituents instead of trying to build a "power base" and playing politics.

This Im unsure of but from all of what Ive seen in the media and have taken away from sites and various articles online another ban is under way. Infatc i think Mr osamas words were something to the effect of within the first 90 days of taking office he would be working on a non reversal ban of assault style rifles.. Theres a potential list somewhere Ill find the link.. I know that this ban would even include the ruger mini 14, which I also own.

Attorney General gets carte blanche to ban guns at will: Under the proposal, the U.S. Attorney General can add any “semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General.”

Note that Obama’s pick for this office, Eric Holder, wrote a brief in the Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home. In making this determination, the bill says, “there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.” In plain English this means that ANY firearm ever obtained by federal officers or the military is not suitable for the public.

The last part is particularly clever, stating that a firearm doesn’t have a sporting purpose just because it can be used for sporting purpose — is that devious or what? And of course, “sporting purpose” is a rights infringement with no constitutional or historical support whatsoever, invented by domestic enemies of the right to keep and bear arms to further their cause of disarming the innocent

You should be fine with your AR; I would stock up on mags if you think that the current administration will be passing another AWB ban. Personally I don't see it happening.

I'm the same way...except it was the Marines for me. It's pretty much second nature to have, want, need an AR-15 for some of us since it's what we trained on basically and something we relied on in one way or another be it domestically, or on foreign soil. Congrats on your new rifle!

Thanks man!! Ive handled the m16A2 since 1997 and for 2 tours overseas I actually handled an M203 with m651 tactical CS grenades.. I absolutly love the M16A2 or any variant of. I wish i was old enough to have had actually had the pleasure of playin with the A1 but it was before my time. Did my share on the 60 but we all know that isnt the funnest one to hump. anyways, ill shutup, but yes, very well said rod, if youve trained on this weapon and its protected yours and your fellow soldiers lives it becomes second nature to shoot this thing.. I love it.
