I very nearly had a similar situation. Had a newbie shooting my XD9sc and had a FTE, and when she went to tap-rack-bang the next round stovepiped. When I went to clear it, I found that the reason it did was that the previous round was a squib and he bullet was stuck in the barrel. Thankfully it was barely into the barrel and the next round wouldn't chamber. I ended up being able to remove it with a dowel and a mallet once I got home, so no harm done.
I am REALLY glad you didn't have a serious explosion on your hands, and super glad you have a good enough friend that he is willing to give you a spare 1911 barrel.
