Anyone else have any thoughts on this.

Actually by saying that your pencil is a weapon just because it could be used to inflict injury upon someone.
Directly means that your Gun is a weapon for the same reason your pencil is a weapon.

Therefore we can conclude that a gun is a weapon.

You can't call a pencil a weapon and then argue that a gun is not.

If you stabbed someone with a pencil, would you be charged with assault with a deadly weapon? What if you shot someone with a gun?

I don't believe this thread, guess that DI was wrong 40+ years ago, he called a rifle a weapon.

A rose by any other name will still ***** you if you grab it by the thorns. Gun, firearm, weapon, gheto blaster, whatever. It shoots bullets and is designed as a weapon, whether used as such or not.

I know of a woman who hit another woman with a stilleto heel and was charging with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Its all about intent, not what the tool is.

I am more disturbed by people who refer to them as "toys" ... as in the "look at my new toy" threads I've seen posted.

Every time I see one, I want to respond, GUNS ARE NOT TOYS...

Maybe it should be my sig line...

I was recently corrected (nicely) by two NRA instructors that I shouldn't call my guns "weapons". I'm retired military and would get in trouble for refering to my m16 as a gun. It was drilled into me that this was my "weapon" and that's all I ever hear it refered to. So for me it's a habit.

Personally I believe that's exactly what it is. But gun, rifle, carbine, all are okay as long as we're not being sucked into being politically correct.

I do think we have to at least consider perception. Consider the perception surrounding "assualt" weapons when that term is almost always inappropriately applied to simple semi auto arms.

It is a problem but I'm not sure we're helping by avoiding the use of "weapon".

I think I would have had to (nicely) tell them to stuff it.

If charged, you would be prosecuted first for the offense or act of violence, that is the assault. You would then likely face additional charges for armed criminal action where a firearm is used.

It really does not matter if you assault someone with a pencil, rock or gun even in what might be self defense. In the eyes of the law you are still going to be subject to a criminal investigation. It is up to our justice system to decide the outcome.

I agree. I was raised on "firearms, weapons, sidearms"

How about firearms ? handguns? pistols, revolvers. Weapons is a term used in the military in basic training and all the time you are in the services as it's their acronym.
