I'd go for the Glock 23 in 40 caliber if you are set on Glock. Just depends on your intended purpose (home defense, concealed carry, range gun?????)

If a person is going to have one handgun...or even one PRIMARY handgun, it should be a Glock 19 imo.

It's good for carry, car and home...plus range food is easy to find and cheap.

And the OP question is: Which Glock?

I'd say forget the GAP. If you want a .45, get the .45 ACP. I rarely see GAP ammo on shelves. It's out there, but harder to find.

Either the 9mm or .45 would be fine if your friend can shoot them. The 9mm is usually "slightly" cheaper for ammo, if money is an issue, & less recoil. If the friend is going to shoot a lot, the 9mm will cost less overall.

Do you want full size or compact? Sub-compact?

    Something to consider:
The .40 S&W. You can pick up a conversion barrel for @$100-150 that will allow you to shoot 9mm in the .40 (Using 9mm mags). Makes the gun a little more versatile.
You can also get a barrel to shoot .357 Sig rounds. They'll fit in a .40 mag.
Just some options if the friend is going to get into shooting a lot.

The G17 was/is the best Glock made. It was the orginal design and it functions.

"thinking about buying a glock what is the best model for the price thinking 9mm or 45 gap"

The Glock 19 in that it is big enough to use well, small enough to conceal well, and the 9mm platforms are the most durable of the Glock line.

Go with what feels good to you, it may not be a Glock. My EDC is a
G19. Defensive handgun classes and lots of practice should be a priorty also.

Yup... if you must have a Glock, the best bang for the buck is the G-19!

In the police academy they showed my uncle that the 9mm bullets can bounce off windshields, I kinda like my bullets to go where I want them too. I wouldn't trade my glock 36 for anything, including my kimber :) my vote is 45ACP. The GAP wont be around for long
