Question What does it take to become a firearms appraiser?

Ok, I searched for 'appraisers' but couldn't find anything on the site yet. The question about whether there were any reputable firearms appraisers in the area has come up twice for me in the past month. Asking in a room full of shooting-types, no one knew of one, or of what it took to become one. They only had sad stories about guys in the past who 'appraised' widows' collections and graciously bought them for what ended up being far under value.

So the question is: What does it take to become a licensed appraiser...someone with enough credentials to fill out a form for insurance and the like?

Gun-Appraisals.com - Online Appraisals On Your Guns, Knives, Rifles, Pistols, Swords and Other Firearms From $9.95

I would guess you would need knowledge of recent comparable sales.

Search your state's board of licensing to see if they even have a category for this.

Most appraisals I have seen go something like this...

"I'll give ya 400 bucks for it..."

"Who is to say that I am not an instrument of karma? Indeed, who is to say that I am not the very hand of God himself, dispatched by the Almighty to smite the Philistines and hypocrites, to lay low the dishonest and corrupt, and to bust the jawbone of some jackass that so desperately deserves it?"
