Ideas for rough hammer spurs.

I have a little S&W 317 2" Airlite .22 that has one of those short hammer spurs which is really sharp on the thumb. If you don't wear a bandaid or something to protect your thumb, after a while of shooting single action, you will be wearing a bandaid.

My idea...coat the spur with plasti-dip.

Anyone else thought of doing this? or what would you do to make it more comfortable to shoot. My wife can hardly cock the hammer back one time, let alone multiple times.

Sounds like a good idea and an easy DIY fix. If it doesn't work out like you hope, you can remove it without any perm. affect on your weapon. Why not give it a try and please post some pics for us to check out. You may be on to something with this. I can think of several applications.

I say fix the problem, don't band-aid it (or your finger). Just take a few passes with a hard stone (like Arkansas) over the sharp parts. Go slow, it won't take much.

Ok here it is. Not too bad. It did help the thumb, and it can be scraped off later (not permanent). I think I'm also going to replace the main spring with and 8 - 8.5 lb spring from wolf.

I also thought about ordering a Hammer kit for the 317-3 and putting it in. That has the larger spur. Better for a .22LR plinker IMO.

Not a chance. It is dipped. It actually appears to shrink as it drys.
This is pretty neat stuff, and you can get it in different colors.

However, I would rather have a full spur hammer on this gun since it is to be used for a plinker, not concealed carry. So I ordered a hammer assembly for the 3" version of this gun, since it is a full spur.

I'm going to switch out the hammer/spur to a full spur one and I also ordered a Wolf 8 lb main spring, this should lighten up the amount trigger pull and the amount of strength it takes to cock the hammer back, making it easier for my wife to shoot it.
