    shipping a rifle?

    All,
I live in Virginia and I want to ship a rifle to my father in Florida for safe keeping. What all do I need (if at all) documents to give to FFL to send it down?

    thanks in advance

I think you would need a copy of the FFL in Florida (or at least the name, address, and phone number). Talk to your FFL here in VA.

Otherwise, nothing else (paperwork-wise) is required.

A copy of the receiving FFL's license. Then you can mail the rifle directly to that FFL (once you verify the receiving FFL will accept it from a private party) using US Post Office. You can also FEDEX or UPS, but it will be more expensive.

Agreed, I've done this. Remove the bolt, if applicable.

The hitch with what you are doing is that the firearm, as far as ATF if concerned, will become your father's property. At the point you wish to retrieve your firearm, you will then need to go through a FFL again to transfer possession back to you unless you have moved to the same state your father resides in and established residency there.

While I've never done the following, I can see no reason it wouldn't be legal. Look at question 9 on the BATF FAQ page. With this information, I believe you could ship the rifle to yourself, in care of your father at this address, and as long as your father doesn't open the package you are legal. You would then have to pick up the firearm in person at some time but it would save having to transfer the rifle twice through a FFL. And remember, IANAL.
