    Question Garage security advice needed...

I am looking to hard wire a microphone,pa system or similar in detached garage as we've had a few break in attempts. We're rural and have only two State Police in our county patrolling at night. Response measured in hrs or next day if non violent incident. Looking to have monitor next to bed so we can hear when paid a visit. I warn everyone against wireless 2.4ghz systems as we discovered we were effectively "bugging" ourselves. Neighbor was receiving audio/video from our camera which became very embarrassing not to mention in itself a breach of security. I do have a security cam that watches driveway w/ motion sensor covering front. Due to layout I cannot cover other avenues of approach or barn. Sound will be sufficient imho. Can anyone recommend a solution? Much appreciated...

    How about a baby monitor?

    Unhappy

    varob,
Baby monitors are 2.4ghz and my neighbor was receiving all output from my 2.4ghz security camera. BTW anyone using any 2.4ghz product had better not have it in there home or where they themselves dont want to be monitored. I mounted one outside my bedroom window. For over a year our scumbag neighbor had free entertainment. Not to mention when window was open, our phone conversations were also broadcast, real bad idea...

I would use a wired two station intercom. You can activate with a motion sensor and connect bedroom side to a strobe. A strobe will wake you even if you are deaf.

Here is a simple system that you can add to. If you use a camera, use a coaxial cable camera, not wireless.

    Set up a booby trap:

    Shotgun Alarm Signal Trip Wire

Of course, you'll have to clean up the mess after the intruder pisses in his pants.

What is the harm in a baby monitor in the detached garage and the receiver in the bedroom? They only transmit one way. Unless there is anything going on in the garage, there's nothing for anyone to listen to. Turn it off when not needed. That seems like a simple and easy solution with nothing going on worth anyone else listening to.

    SigP250,
Thanx, I'm looking for one as of now. It has a function to monitor around unit, just what I need.

    Patti,
Actually bought one already , I use it when we camp. Fiochi makes extra loud blanks that work well...

    Bugdude,
You have a good point. But where I've gotta install it, it does'nt work well enough anyway.Tried it already.I had it on the opposite side of house where it worked TOO well. I installed it outside my window after we woke up one morning and four screens had been pulled off and leaned against house. Since then we got ADT , only on house. Installed motion lights. The intercom should be just the ticket. Our house is well insulated, hard to hear anything outside.Dog snores louder than wife, another issue. Terrible watchdog(boxer)...

Can you have ADT extended to the garage?

Unfortunately, that intercom has been discontinued and would only be available used. There are several other wired security cameras and other accessories. I am installing the Schlage LiNK system in my house. Here is one part of that system: Schlage LiNK Keypad Lever Starter Kit (Satin Nickel) : Keypad Lever Kits | RadioShack.com and the Wired camera that goes with it: Schlage LiNK WCE100 Wired Camera : Security & Surveillance Cameras | RadioShack.com

Remote control and alert capability to cell phones and computers. I think that it would make a good addition to my security setup @ home.

It sounds like you know exactly what you need. If you are handy and know some basic electronics, I am sure you can build yourself a reliable system. Schlage with Ingersoll Rand as parent company has made some headway into security systems. I normally only specify larger commercial building systems, Simplex, Siemens, Honeywell, etc.
I like the booby trap idea, sort of.

Your initial post said "hard wired."

If you're serious about that description, then for under $125 you could get a $10 microphone from Radio Shack, and the cheapest used boom box as a preamp, 100 feet of 24 gauge shielded twisted pair wire, and a cheap mono PA amplifier, again from Radio Shack. Run the output to a PA speaker, and turn the volume up. Use a cheap lamp timer to switch the system on in the evening and off in the morning.

Skip the wireless approach for the reasons you mention, and save money to boot.
