While I often do go out unarmed in town, I never ever travel out of town
unarmed. All it takes to have trouble find you is a flat tire and bad luck; an auto accident with the wrong person; or a pit stop at the wrong place and time.

The people who are in charge of our current governments large may fear and profile these thousands and thousands of returning combat and other veterans, of our two current foreign wars, like their pet media hors [not bad word]; but it is sort of neat and sweet to know that they are and have been defending the best of us and the rest of us, after they get back home...from the predators who roam.

It's also refreshing to have a medium get the "victim" and "suspect" correct.

The good guy taking time to warn the BG before shooting, certainly increased the risk to himself and his family... but it will also help him/family deal with the emotional aftermath that will certainly follow.

When the robber turned and pointed his pistol at the victims, the serviceman fired several rounds. The robber fell to the ground and dropped his weapon. His accomplices helped the wounded man back to the sedan as they fired several rounds at the serviceman.

Congrarts to this family having roadside trouble and able to defend themselves against the dirtbag willing to prey on them...too bad the dirtbag is not yet a dead offender.
The scumbags who stayed in the car, but were still part of the crime should be caught and charged also.

We know of the verbal commands from the policereport; maybe they were issued after

The second rule: "Bring enough gun"

As soon as Jakes' accomplices attempted to exit the car, I would have began firing on them. They were part of his "crew" and were a threat. As it was, they returned fire as they were speeding away.
As a legal defender, having just shot one bad guy, I would not give his "crew" the opportunity to exit the vehicle and try to flank me.
As it was, all ended well... But if it was me, as soon as they attempted to exit the car, I would inform them "if they get out, they get shot!"
They could leave their buddy to die on the side of the road, or they can stay and fight. Their choice.

This kinda stuff just warms my heart.
True, in the best of all worlds the family would never have been in any danger. But we don't live in the best of all worlds, we live in this one; and this is the kind of thing that happens every day. It's reality and it has BEEN reality throughout history, ever since there was a highway along which a traveler could get jacked.
An event like this is only traumatic because people isolate themselves away from reality and never accept (much less dwell on) the possibility that this might happen. Denial makes the world seem a lot nicer than it is, and it makes first-hand experience of a tragedy far, far worse than it needs to be.

My thoughts too.
Glad the outcome was what it was, and that the son-in-law was armed. Otherwise, I'm betting two women's bodies would have been found out in the countryside instead.
