    Rest Area robbery/shooting: North Carolina

When traveling I try to avoid rest areas for just this reason. Here in North Carolina we can carry in rest areas but some other states make it safer for the criminals instead.

Two men robbed, one shot at Granville County rest stop

Oxford, N.C. ó Granville County sheriff's officials said an unknown man robbed two men and shot one of them in a rest stop bathroom along Interstate 85 South near Oxford around 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

The victims and shooter did not know each other, according to Detective Bryant Strother, who called it a random act.

One of the victims was shot multiple times and was being treated at a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The victims' names were not released, but authorities said one of the men was from Florida and the man who was shot had recently moved to the Charlotte area from Rhode Island.

Authorities said the shooter stood on a urinal, looked over the wall at one of the victims in a stall, pointed a gun and robbed him.

The shooter left in a silver or gold passenger car, and another person could have been in the car as well, according to sheriff's officials. No other details were available.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Granville County Crime Stoppers at 919-693-3100. Callers can remain anonymous. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered in the case.

Jimmy Parrish, a supervisor in charge of the state's 61 rest stops, said crime is very minimal at the stops and there are no surveillance cameras around the restrooms.

Many drivers who visited the rest stop on Friday said they believe the cameras would go a long way toward restoring their feeling of security.

"They do need to have some security cameras around, not in the restrooms, but at least going in and out of them," Warren County resident Margo Holbrook said.

The Department of Transportation said there is talk of putting cameras in rest stops statewide.

No indication that the victim resisted and he still got shot.

When at a rest stop ALWAYS go into a stall and lock the door. You are real venerable with your 'junk' out and your hands full.

Having a gun with you would be far better security than a video camera.

A video camera is more of a crime documentation device, and not a security device.

That would never happen in GA. It's illegal to carry handguns at interstate reststops. ;-) And FL has "armed security" at it's reststops at night--if you can wake them up in their cars parked way away from traffic. :-(

Whatever makes the migrating herds 'feel' safer.........cameras???

How about something in, say, .45?

This guy got caught with his pants down.....nothing that could be done vice having a sidearm of his own and getting in a gunfight in a restroom stall is NOT all that good an idea either.
    Hope this gentalman pulls through.

I have never used a rest stop. I'll wait for a gas station, or if it's a really rural highway, I'll just use a bush.

Ya know you can just turn loose and grab your gun, it won't detach and run out the door.

Worst case scenario, you get your junk dunked in cold water. Besides, it may distract the BG enough by hosing him down when you spin around that you get the chance to draw without detection.

I appendix carry...that makes it real easy to draw undetected while standing at a urinal. If you carry at 4 o'clock or SOB, it would be much more difficult.

I do not frequent rest areas that require me to be unarmed. I watch/listen for anyone entering, and when they leave. My gun is readily available, and if I heard someone climbing a urinal, the dirtbag will be looking over the wall and into a Glock...no other warning will be given. My SA is on ultra high alert in and around rest areas.
