Left the car running and left the area? Sounds like an invitation to have one's car stolen. I wonder if the car's owner sees the error even now.

Judging by what happened, she's lucky she didn't get killed.

Did she leave some extra money on the seat for snacks and more gas?

Does this really fit the definition of carjacking?

He didn't exactly force himself into an occupied car.

Sounds more like theft my means of stupidity.

Never leave your car running anywhere. Fixed.

edit: wow. Zombie thread. My bad.

    Well, that was stupid.

TamTam's gonna have to ride the bus. Silly girl.

I would guess that once she tried to hold the car with her strength and weight, and the perp shot at her... it sorta became a carjacking.
    It could be worse.

While my comment below is a slightly different situation than the one in the story, the important message is LOCK YOUR CAR AT ALL TIMES. Get out, lock. Enter, immediately lock. Try to keep the "unlocked time" to a bare bones minimum.

Recently some model cars have automatic locks which will lock when the car is moving about 9 mph. You can of course over-ride and deliberately lock the car the moment you get in. You can also (probably depends on make and model) reset so the locks will lock the car when it is placed in gear.

I don't like these type of locks because it is easy to get used to letting them do the work and then there is plenty of opportunity for a car-jacker to grab the door handle and pull the door open before you get rolling quickly enough, or before get rolling at all.

The handbook for my Honda has instructions for resetting the lock mode. Last week I rented a Jeep and its default mode was to auto lock at about 9 mph. Not safe for the renter, and not smart for the rental company. You want the car to lock quickly, perhaps even when the driver's seat belt is hooked.
