I am thinking of doing something similar, but making it a "hidden" room. I am thinking of making a bookshelf, the door, with hidden locks. I have an area in my house, right beside a bedroom, that has 10' x 12' blank area. When i built the house they offered a cedar closet in the area. I did nothing, so I am thinking of doing that instead. Keep us posted on your project.
Cool idea. I don't have any room for anything like that until my kids grow up (and out). I'll tag this thread to see what transpires.

On the other hand, what is wrong with having a mildly strong room with a commercial gun safe or multiple safes if needed? Wouldn't it be more cost effective?

Nothing wrong with that. A good vault door cost a little less than one big safe. If you're adding a room or building a new house adding in a 30' of poured wall is not much if you're already doing concrete work. If you aren't handy with tools and aren't doing major remodeling it would probably be easier to do multiple safes. I would guess that if your collection takes more than 2 large safes look hard at a vault room.Quote:

I'm planning a large add on that will have a covered porch. Here in cold weather country I have to have a 4' deep foundation under it. It will cost next to nothing (in the grand scheme of the project) to go 8' deep beef up the wall thickness and rebar include some extra waterproofing, add a vault door from the basement and bingo a secure room with a footprint outside the normal living space. Then I won't have any missing area for people to wonder whats there.
Same thing could be done under a small room addition make it look like it's a crawl space with fake foundation vents and scuttle hole but actually put in a full basement and hide the door.
If you have a deep walk in closet the back of it could get walled off with a place to put a safe or two. If you wall in tight around the safes and recess them a little it would make it real hard to get at them with any tools to cut or pry. Depending on how handy you are you could make it look like nothing is there behind the clothes.
Any safe or vault can be breached with enough time. You need a combination of alarms and physical security. If I have all day to work on your safe while you are at work I will get into it no matter how much concrete and steel you have. There isn't much one of these and a sledgehammer won't get into.
The big thing to know is what is your PD's response time, I know I'm looking at 20min from alarm to first unit arriving. I need something that will keep people out for about 30 min either by hiding it or making it really hard to get into. If I have a 15min rated security container I'm going to hide it better than a 60min rated commercial safe.
One key point, is if it's more of a hidden room, and less of a vault, is not to tell people. I think my biggest problem would be my desire to 'show it off'.
