I picked up the March issue of Guns & Ammo while I was grocery shopping yesterday. It presents a pretty strong argument for using an AR-15 for home defense and recommends Winchester PDX1 as the ammo for it. Does anybody have any thoughts on this combination?

12 gauge Benelli, 0000 buck. That'll calm things down in a hurry.

I'm torn between handgun or shotgun but Id say a wall of lead coming from a Remington 870 will stop pretty much any intruder.

I had to vote Handgun (Kahr CW45). It would be my shotty if I would get me a quick accessible safe for it!

For many years, I would have said my 9mm. Over the last year, I have been relying on my .45. Now, however, I'm leaning on my AR 15.

Exactly ! With a loaded, sawn-off, 870 wingmaster, if need be, in 4 seconds the BG will have 45, quarter-inch balls of lead in him.........
Hmmm, I think thats even faster than you can empty your AR-15....

I know a lot of you consider a shotgun to be "old fashioned" and out of date, but it is a very effective weapon.......

I voted Shotgun but when I heard a noise on the back porch the other night the first thing I grabbed was my 1911. ( fortunately the noise was just an umbrella falling against the back door during a storm )

With all due respect to the effectiveness of a shotty, I lean towards a well practiced pistol for primary HD/PD. Maneuverability, fast follow-up shots and the ability to shoot proficiently with one hand, leaving the other hand for dialing 911 or enjoying a lovely beverage!

In the Nightstand GunVault: Springfield XD40 4" Service model with a GTL-21 light/laser. 12 rd magazine, loaded 3 rds of PDX-1, 3 rds FNFMJ, 3 more PDX, 3 more FMJ
When lounging as a potato on the couch or in the hammock (EDC/CCW): Sig P238 Equinox w/CTC, 7+1 rounds of Speer Gold Dot, 7 more in tow (Concealed on-body and I ain't sayin' where )
and yes.. should the need arise, Mister Mossberg 12g is available to make an appearance.

I believe home defense is best handled by a short shotgun or short carbine. Prefered are 870 wingmaster riot gun with 20" bbl and rifle sights, and 16" AR-15 with collapsable stock. Then any good revolver in .357 mag or 1911 45 ACP.

I didn't see Lightsaber from star wars on the poll. but.

No but seriously I grab a handgun (.40S&W), my brother grabs a 12 Gauge (Mossy) my dad grabs his handgun (9mm) mom has a .38spl +P.

I would pick my AR-15 but I don't have anywhere to lock it upstairs while I'm gone all day. Plus we wouldn't want to be over kill now would we?

If you use a rifle for home defense, pick your ammo for the circumstances you will encounter. If you are concerened about over penetration then get some 55 gr soft points or the old style 55 gr FMJ. These two bullets tear themselves up on home walls and flesh. Some of the current military ball is designed to penetrate structures and would not be my first choice. Each weapon has advantages and weaknesses, that is why you see 3 types listed by me. Rifle, shotgun, pistol. Get darn good with all three and use as needed.
