"…Store employees said this was the third such incident at the store in the past couple of weeks, and that if the trend continues, the 24-hour store will have to close at night …"

It happened because the employees were not armed. These "people" know very well that they can grab the items and just walk away without problems.

I'll agree with you to an extent. I suspect the problem is deeper than that. We all know that even if the employees were armed, who is going to be willing to face the law over shooting a person over stealing candy? I bet the law in that area is not nearly as forgiving on that as the law here in Texas is.

The truth is, if these mobs encountered ANY form of resistance, even if it was just being hit with a broom, they'd probably quit doing it. The trouble is, I guarantee if some employee hit one of these thieves with a broom, they'd wind up facing charges over it. The law has left these store owners helpless to defend themselves.

    I agree with adric22.

I actually thick in some locations, more than we would like to think, that the law may side more with the criminals, depeding on what action the store clerk or owner took.

So the question that begs to be answered is: "how can we deter this behavior to start with (shop owners, citizens, clerks, LEO's), and how to deal with it after it has occurred?"
The trend has already started, and is catching on like wildfire. If these keep going on without steps taken to deter the action, and consequences for the action, how far will it go?

Very far. If the trend is not stopped right now the flash mob robberies will get more violent every day.

They can't respond to a "shoplifting" call with a swat team. But maybe the law can be changed to include these flash mobs as a type of domestic terrorism so the punishment goes WAY up?

Wouldn't it technically be considered "organized crime?"

Taken literally, yes. I'm not sure what the letter of the law says.

Yes, organized criminal activity. Terrorism has been and should remain a totally different thing. Not every crime which raises fear in its victims is an act of terrorism. If we took that position almost any crime could be misconstrued as such.

this will play itself out soon as

one of the Mamma's joins in a mob with its child on her--

and the infant gets injured so she sues the store for allowing a mob scene (that she was a member of)
    to endanger her babies life.

now there will be lawyers involved, Dept of Children's Rights and the police will have to identify and arrest everyone.

or was that an episode on Barney Miller?

Coming your way soon. Leo`s need to jump on this ASAP before the violence breaks out. The gunplay will start soon as those attacked begin to defend themselves and their familys. Someday it`s gonna happen, bet on it!.

    1. Clerks behind bullet-proof glass, separated from the sales area.
    2. Automatic Locking Doors that the clerk can UNLOCK once the customer has payed for stuff. No pay = no unlocked doors and 9-1-1 is called.

Just an idea that may need some tweaking.
