A dog is a great alarm, buys you time, and in cases such as this give their life for their owner. Most of all they are great companions.

R.I.P. Joe and know that you made the ultimate sacrifice for those you love
There is no greater love than to sacrifice yourself to save another. That goes for dogs too.

Congrats to a fallen hero, Joe!

Too bad the dog didn't get the sucker by the neck.

I'm afraid if he had shot my dog, I would have been right behind him .. tracking him down.

Sympathy to the family and the dog, what a hero he was. Maybe the family will arm themselves now. I feel a lot of security with our two Boxer dogs and our unusually large spaniel. When our doorbell rings, the boxers growl and run to the door. If I do not hurry to see who it is,they run to the living room and look at me like ' Hey ! Will you hurry up, somebody at the door !' They are very territorial, their house, their yard. Not crazy about strangers. I sleep better knowing they are around. The upside of two or three aggressive dogs, one may get shot ( God forbid) but shooting two or three charging at you in the dark might be a problem.

I'm looking at my dogs all crapped out on the couch...with a renewed sense of appreciation and frankly love. Dogs like Joe convict us and comfort us. Thanks Joe. RIP

Damn, my monitor got all blurry there for a moment. Good boy Joe. You did well. Have a large bone and a nice nap when you get to heaven.

This is why I am armed at all times at home. I can assure you, if some intruder kills one of my dogs, he won't be escaping.

There is nothing you can do with folks like that! Jail sentence is far to short and rehabilitation is a joke and a waste of time and money!! A set of cement shoes a short boat ride in a heavily crab populated area.

Very sad... The last line in the OP choked me up pretty good... RIP Joe, and may the intruder die screaming and riving in pain..

Amen to American Bulldogs! Ol' Roxie is a coward, bless her big heart, but she is always on the job trying her best and looking the part. Dogs are amazing creatures. Joe is just another of many dogs who have sacrificed themselves for their families.
