Locked in the trunk unloaded and cased would be the best way I believe. And BRING LOTS OF MONEY for the tolls... I hate Illinois..

Don't.

Fill up your gas tank and your belly before entering Illinois. Do not buy anything, Do not spend ANY money there. No sense funding the anti's.

Go around it.
Disclaimer:
My opinion shouldn't be taken seriously due to the fact that I've been shooting guns for over 30 years and have only recently been active on gun forums, where all the real world knowledge apparently is.
I texted an old friend who I grew up with in Chicago who is a retired detective.I will see what he say's I guess.
Going around Illinois doesn't interest me.Taking a ferry from Milw. to Michigan may be an option.I will post what my friend recomends. He should know
IL law requires the gun be unloaded and in a case. If it is accessable to the occupants, it can be concidered a concealed weapon and they will really jerk you around. Unnloaded in a case in the trunk is the safest place.
I'd rather be lucky than good any day

Lock it up in the trunk with ammo secured separately. Fill your car up, get food and drink to last a few hours, go to the bathroom, and drive straight through. For extra peace of mind, make sure all of your lights are working and don't be the fastest person on the highway. This is what I do every time I go through Maryland.
This is my exchange with the Illinois State Police Firearms Division Dated Jan 27, 2012:
ME:
I am aware that Illinois does not recognize my Missouri CCW.
I travel into Illinois often on business and do not have an FOID card.
Am I correct that in order to legally travel through Illinois with my
firearm that I would need to do the following before entering the state:
be legally eligible to possess or acquire firearms and ammunition in my
state of residence
ensure the weapon is unloaded, and
ensure the weapon is enclosed in a case, and
ensure the weapon is not immediately accessible or broken down in a
nonfunctioning state
Is there any specific requirement for transport of the ammunition that was
in the weapon or in any additional magazines or revolver strips?
Thank you!
THEM:
The information you listed is correct. With regards to ammunition, it can
be in the same case as the firearm but must not be loaded into the firearm.
Thank you,

To be honest the guy lives in Wisconsin and it would be a PITA to have to travel thru Iowa and Missouri just to bypass Illinois,It can be somewhat aggravating for a new member asking a reasonable question to get a decent response without the numerous posts stating "Go around, move to another state, shoulda bought a Glock, etc."
357and40 nailed the answer, keep coming back someday you can be a smartass like us

Actually going around isn't a totally smartass answer in this case...
Lake Express has a ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon allowing one to avoid both Chicago traffic and Illinois' rediculous gun laws altogether.
Then an almost direct route south to Michigan City on I-94.

Glad to hear the info 357and40 from the Il state police no less. I've got a trip planned for the summer from St. Louis to Santa Claus, Indiana and wanted to be SURE about how to get thru Illinois unscathed.
