I just got back from buying hose to install a vintage gas station bell on my driveway. I can't see the driveway from the shop. That will eliminate the false warning the electric units give when deer visit. The "Yellow Horde" could still creep up on me, but their tanks will be detected!

Two coffie can lids, with nail holes, seperated by wax paper wired to (redacted) with bbs glued in = po man's claymore, or so I'm told. Never seen one myself.

    Dogs work well too.

I lived in Serbia til i came to US. Certain Serbian farmers would go to active mine field steal landmines and mine their property. Every year few people would die because they wanted to steal farmers livestock or moonshine.
ADT work almost as good. its important to have some kind of early warning system due to the fact most of people are on some kind of sleeping medication.

I am moving onto 25 acres with a new house. The house is going to have a security system and the 25 acres will be under the protection of my 135 lb. Anatolian Shepard. She takes her job seriously. All of this and a few things that go boom.

I have motion sensor wall lights on all exterior surfaces and three floods that are all motion activated. My home backyard and detached garage all have gravel paths and are noisy. If the wife does not hear or I don't get woke by the floods that also light up the bedroom curtains, the dog does his thing. S&W lives upstairs and XDMc lives on the main floor with a walther back up... The exterior phone jack is located under my front deck and very hard to find and get to if a BG is looking for it. No batteries required for any of the outside lights... Both garages are on the alarm system as well. I have a blue flashing light outside the garage to alert the neighbors I have an intruder. Also have a siren next to the blue light and one in the attic facing the vent toward the neighbors... and all power and phone services are underground throughout the hood.... I sleep well knowing all is well out there...

Having said that, I think the OP has a good plan with the cheap but effective alert system...

it's been a month and a half, and I LOVE my driveway bell. They make reproductions, but i got an original for free while picking an old garage. I can hear it anywhere on the front half of my property, and the dog always investigates.

I have punji pits outside all windows, and black mambas tied to the inside of each door. Irritates the heck out of my wife, but I've only lost one neighbor so far...

If it were legal.... It would be great if they made sensors that delivered a responsie like a 'phased plasma rifle in a 40 watt range' - a-la 'The Terminator....'

Dogs aren't reliable even though I believe in using them. They don't hear or smell everything. They don't continually circle your house looking for bad guys. I'm not bragging since I did something dangerous and stupid that could have got me dead as a teenager. There was a pretty girl I went to school with that I went to check out. They lived on the plains where neighbors are miles apart. I took a heavy wooden ladder across an open field, through the windbreak being careful not to step on twigs and branches. Then across the lawn and propped up the heavy ladder. This family had Blue Healer dogs. They are very aware of what's around, except for me.

It wasn't a successful night for me, but it proves that dogs shouldn't be the only thing you rely on. Those people needed lights and some driveway sensors like being talked about here that are around the house. I wouldn't have been able to make it to the house with those other layers.

I'm not proud of this now, as a dad myself. There is no doubt that the girls dad would have meant business and I could have very easily ended up dead. All I did was go when a storm was headed or way and it was windy and I stayed down wind from the dogs.

    Teenage boys are dumb.
