Armed robber shot, three in custody

    SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

Three men are in custody after one of them was shot in the behind during an armed robbery at a Sumter business Monday morning.

According to the Sumter Police Department, the robbery happened around 10:30 a.m. at Sumter Financial Services located at 547-B Miller Rd.

Police said three black males approximately 25-35 years old wearing masks and brandishing handguns entered the business demanding money.

The suspects obtained an undetermined amount of cash from the business before exiting the rear of the business. An employee at the business fired a gunshot at the suspects as they were fleeing and hit one of them in the buttocks, investigators said.

I'm not a lawyer and didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I hope that the employee doesn't get into legal hot water for shooting a person in the butt as he exited the property.

Well, if the employee is smart, he will make it clear that he fired the shot " as the robber was turning in his direction with the gun". As I'm sure this is probably what happened, no doubt.

And I'm sure he will make it clear that the only reason he " followed " them was to try and get a good ID on the car and tags to give police.
Ignorance is a long way from stupid, but left unchecked, can get there real fast.

Ain't it a damn shame that the criminals do not play by any rules but the law abiding citizen victim has to.

It's a line from 'Forrest gump' when he was told that he had the 'million dollar wound'.

The 'are they still a threat' conundrum is a tough one when you have a situation like this where a victim shoots the bad guy in the back/butt area. My personal thought is, "way to go!", but I realize legally it's a difficult one to decide on.

Score one for the good guys. Good for the employee for carrying, and good (hopefully?) that the employer supported it. Hope he doesnt get in any hot water for the butt-shot.
