    Home security focus group

Here is an ad I saw on Craigslist

MFORCE Research, a marketing research company from Chicago is currently looking for people to participate in a paid market research study on the topic of HOME SECURITY. We are looking for men and women in the Portland metro area to participate in this in-home study. Two to three researchers will come to your house and interview you (they will record video and audio as well) for two to two and a half hours about your thoughts and opinions on home security. At this time, we need parents with iPhones that own and use a security system for their home to participate. We are doing this strictly for research purposes to see what consumers like you are looking for in a security system and talk about what the future of home security will be like. No sales attempts will result from your participation.

Participants will be paid $200 upon completion of the interview. We have various times available on either August 22nd or 23rd.

If you are interested in participating, answer the following pre-survey. If you appear to qualify, we will give you a call and get you scheduled for a date/time:

    Thanks again,

Seems like a very narrow customer base...

Under no circumstances would I allow them into my home. These things, conducted by serious organizations, are done in hotel conference rooms or somewhere like that. This sounds like nothing but a bunch of thugs casing your house and recording what you have.

Hm. Parents with iPhones guiding the future of home security? Narrow group, to be sure. Seems like the Chicago-based "security" firm has got its mind made up about what it's producing, and is looking for a few tweaks.

No knowing what their full research entails, but ... If they were interested in exploring the market potential, they'd speak with (a) experts regarding what crimes actually occur on the street and (b) a random/blind sample that'll give a truer measure of people's overall concerns.

Yeah.... That's pretty shady indeed. It amazes me though, that people will go for it.

I'd respond to that ad, I'd give them this address though (9511 W. Harrison St. Des Plaines, Illinois) and tell them to they are welcome any time.

I noticed the fact that they are from Chicago. Once they find out what your security is, they are clear to break in, knowing that no one would have a gun to defend themselves.
    Too cute.

Well, since they're looking for parents with iPhones and doing this "strictly for research purposes to see what consumers are looking for in a security system", I'd simply tell them that my "security system" has nothing to do with an invention by Steve Jobs and everything to do with a creation by one John M. Browning.
