Don't laugh, but I have two Yorkshire Terriers. I can not recommend that breed as a guard dog, but they make excellent watch dogs. Very alert, and let me know immediately when something is awry. However, if someone broke in when I was not home, they would be useless.

I own a blue pit. He barks at noises out side, sometimes. He sleeps like a rock at night, especially if I'm home. He will jump on and lick anyone and everyone that comes to the house. With that said, I don't know what'd he'd do if someone tried to hurt a family member and he's a little intimidating to look at if you wouldn't know any better.

I'll give him a guard dog rating of a D. lol

A very vocal Boston Terrier. She has ears like you won't believe. I swear she can hear a mosquito fart.

I have BT too! They're great dogs.

My Rat Terrier will hit the sack early and then about time for me to go to bed he's up and on patrol. Just the way he's always been, we put him to bed about 8 and he is dead asleep then about midnight he's on the very foot of the bed "protecting the pack" ready to raise the alarm. He will make his rounds about every hour or so and I sleep pretty well with him on guard.

Lost our Lab/Rottweiler mix this year. He was an awesome watch dog, very alert and a super imposing bark. We miss him terribly.

We have 5 dogs, 2 are larger, 3 are ankle biter class. They make a lot of noise, but I think they would not protect our Property. However, if someone was wanting to hurt one of us, they would tear them to shreds, THIS I am sure.

Sorry for the loss, but congrats on the new Golden Retriever. Hard to loose a family member, a new dog never replaces a lost one, it just makes its own place.

I have a 4 year old male Boxer. He is an excellant protector. He only barks when he hears something he doesn't like, or if someone comes to my door. I wasn't completely sure how he'd do when it actually came to someone being in my house, but a poor relationship choice proved that his bite is definitely as bad as his bark. It's true what they say...Never trust someone your dog doesn't like!!

    Funkybassplayer...

I'm calling the authorities on you...how shameful that you don't feed that Beagle.

We have had at least one Dobie ever since 1982 (5 in all). Everyone has been a great guard dog, with no training. All except one was a great family dog. The exception was purely my dog. He tolerated the other family members but only minded me. Therefore, my wife and kids were not that fond of him, but I really loved him. We've had 2 males and 3 females. My wive won't have any other breed.
