Layers of protection for your home.

I have plenty of firearms, but if someone is able to sneak up on you in your home or kick your door in before you have time to react then your in trouble. Here is a list of suggestions to help your first alert system. Some are affordable, some aren't.


Hidden- Would be things such as hidden video cameras that uploads to the internet. Sensors in your yard that only alert you, instead of alerting the criminal. A fence that has a half opened pad lock on the outside, but a hidden lock on the inside of the gate.
Locks that are not bump proof on the outside, but a hidden remote operated lock on the inside.

Overt- Security system decals on windows and a sign in the yard. A big dog in your yard. No tresspassing or will be shot signs. Gun racks on the back of your pickup with no rifle in them. Size 16 shoes covered in mud at the front door.

Along with these things, you could have thorny plants around the windows. There are also sensors that you can put in the ground that alert you us an intruder outside.


Storm or burglar doors. Bullet or scatter resistant windows. Burglar bars on windows or doors. There are better burglar bars than others, the burglar bars that can be taken with just a screwdriver or wrench are okay, but I prefer installing them inside the window. There are burglar bars that are installed, inside the home instead of out, these are much better.

You can also get a home alarm where all the doors and windows are monitored, then you can get vibration sensors on the windows in case someone breaks the glass instead of trying to actually raise the windows.

Basiclly, if you have the money or know how you can set your home up to be a death trap for any criminal.

A cheap way to protect your home from kick door invasions is to wedge a board between the bottom of your door and the bottom of your wall. Some homes you can do this and others you can't. You could even have a brace installed that is bolted to the concrete in your floor, then a bar would extend to the bottom of your door.

Then there are door jamb reinforcement items you can buy. Metal door frames. Solid doors. Etc.

There are ways that you can harden your home, and I have done several things to make my home harder to attack and less than ideal for someone looking for a home to attack. But in honesty if someone wants to come in your home and do violent things nothing will stop them. That's why I am never apart from my pistol. It is next to me now, will be in my holster when I get up in a moment and when I go to bed it will be on the night stand.

They've yet to build a prison that will keep everyone in and a home that will keep everyone out. Those two items combined should motivate anyone to keep a weapon on or near them at all times.

Oh, there are prisons that will keep people in. Criminals sometime escape from these prisons, because they are given too much freedom. Take away all of a prisoners civil rights and let me design whatever contraption to restrain them and I quarantee you I could make sure no one ever escapes. They don't need to socialize, they don't need out of their cell. They don't need other prisoners bringing them laundy, etc.. They stay in their cell the whole time. If they are dying of a disease, they die in their cell without going to a hospital. No one comes in the cell or out. If they flood their cells, they fix it themselves. If they start a fire in their cell we hose it down from outside the cell. If they flood their cell and thye can't fix it themselves, they get several bullets to the head.

Whatever a person wants to do to their home to give them a first alert to an invader thats up to them, as long as they take reasonable first alert measures it will give them some time to get their gun.

A friend of mine was knocked out while he was sleeping and his wallet, firearms and some other things were stolen. The thief used a bump key or other lock picking device to enter his home, because there was no forced entry. He was hit in the head with a blunt object, he never heard a sound. Don't be like him.

Hey, there are people on here that carry two firearms, a knife, and whatever else on there person at a time. I believe that a great defense is often overlooked.

1. Alarm system - check!

2. Two big dogs - check!

3. Wife and I are always armed - check!

I have an eighteen-tier security plan to ward off home intrusion. If they get through all eighteen, I have the next seventeen for them to further navigate.

Yeah that is what I thought. A weapon does no good if someone sneaks up on you while your sleeping and knocks you out cold or kills you. Alert system is necessary.

There are certainly lots of improvements and changes people can do, to help reduce the risk of threats. While I'm positive I'm missing some, here are a few that everyone should consider:

Security alarm; proximity zone of alarm turned on and used reliably; glass-break, motion and pressure sensors as appropriate; videocam coverage of key spots, including with sufficient video storage to document crimes and provide evidence. Outdoor security lighting, motion sensitive, done in such a way that the interior of home is not visible from outside when activated.

Windows/frames tough enough to withstand determined entry, if possible. Locks ... use them.

Doors/frames tough enough to withstand determined entry, if possible. Locks ... use them.

Lower-floor windows that are harder to approach, ie with thorned bushes surrounding them.

Doors with clear line of sight around them, to dissuade surprise entries.

Noise-making surfaces around perimeter (ie, "crunching" gravel) to provide advance warning of stealthy movements during non-standard hours.

Garaged/alarmed vehicle. Spare gas in suitable can(s).

Home layout that's defensible, inside; defensible approach corridors to bedroom areas; stout/security bedroom doors and windows.

Firearms/weapons/ammo in defended rooms; firearms/weapons carried with key people around property at all times; firearms/weapons/ammo easily accessible during sleeping hours.

Portable light, charged (batteries), including hand-crank type as well (if able).

Phones/singnaling in rooms not subject to broken land lines or deliberately-fouled airwaves.

Spares of key items.

Spares of keys.

Dogs, if you've got them, that are alert enough (and ideally, protective/strong enough) to provide advance warning and guarding of the home.

Relationships within the family and with neighbors that are strong and communicative; have a plan; be on the same page with others regarding "the plan"; regularly train/rehearse the plans for various situations.

Having alert neighbors who watch out for each other; watch out for other neighbors and their property.

Bug-out-bag; clothing that's easily tossed on in case of emergency.

Have good relations with police/sheriff forces, personally.

Have lists of critical contact/numbers with everyone, easily accessible.

Have spare food/water, alternatives for light/power in case of extended power and/or food outages.

Duplicate important documents and items, having copies elsewhere in case of emergency.

Have a source of ready cash.

Impressive list! I like to add that an alarm system that uses a celluar phone system is better than a land line that can be cut. However; I cut my old phone line on purpose to test my alarm company, they immediately called my cell phone. Not sure how they did that.

Some of these things might be ok, but it sounds like your putting yourself in prison. Keep your doors locked and your gun on you when your home. There's nothing you can do to get a 100% gaurantee of security short of going to prison where you have your every need taken care of. The only thing you wouldn't have is your freedom. Also, there are fire and building codes to take in to consideration when your putting bars on your windows and all these locks on your doors. The shrubs around the outside could also provide the BG concealement. I know everyones preperation should be appropriate for the area in which they live,but if you build a prison around yourself, the BG has already won.

Nobody needs to be in a prison, nor make one's home into a prison.

Nearly nobody is going to do each and every element in that laundry list. Most will do several. Some can't afford much of it. Many of those elements are simply common sense. Be prepared, have a plan, communicate well and often, train, have spares, have as many layers in the defensive posture as can be afforded and as are practical. Simple, mostly, given enough time and money.
