I also have a 6 year old at home and he gets into EVERYTHING that isn't locked down! My wife is still not comfortable with me carrying around the house, so I keep them in the safe at home. With that said, the alarm is set and I have 2 dogs that are extremely aggressive in their protection of my wife and son. My odds aren't as good as most of you, but they aren't horrible either. This is a great topic to think about...

It is where is always is when I am not in bed--in it's holster, on my right hip. When I am in bed, it is within arms reach in the nightstand. And the 870 is under the edge of the bed within arms reach as well.

About a foot. Unfortunately given that my door is right here in the living room chances are I have a slim chance at such a surprise if my gun were already in my hand. Unless they didn't have guns :)

To be honest, a few feet but between me and the door.
    Guess I gotta reexamine that...

Three feet. We had an interesting situation happen the other night that underlines your question. I have a key thob in my pocket that if touched properly will set off a panic silent alarm at my home. Apparently this night I did that accidently. We live in a rural setting but the sherriff deputies have always arrived at other very unfortuate false alarms within ten minutes, (not quick enough to actually help if we had a home invasion) this time they arrived in about four minutes which was pretty amazing. Here's the deal that taught me and my family something. No one comes to our house unannounced that knows us and yet I heard a car screaming down my driveway. I told two family members a code word that meant go to the bedroom and grab the house guns for a defensive position. Before they got down the hallway the deputy was out of his car and at the door. A quick kick to the door and we would have been in a SHTF situation had he been the boogie man. I had my personal carry in hand and quickly put it back in my hidden holster when I realized it was Barney. It was a great lesson learned that I will keep "it" on me while in the house and my family better get down the hall a little quicker when I say GO.

There's a firearm in every room within 5 - 10 feet, and my EDC is on my side 24/7.
