Someone opening my fence at night. Need advice.

So tonight was the 3 rd time I have found my privacy fence open in the last few weeks.

We have a heavy latch and the gate sags slightly. This means you have to hold the latch open and shoulder it open. I seriously doubt this is the wind. It requires the latch to be pinched open whole pushing. Probably why it's left open. It makes a horrible thud to close it.

I know I latched it earlier last week only to find it open in the morning. Tonight my wife latched it and I just found it open again after realizing we forgot to put the trash out. Previously when I found it open, I was unsure if I really latched it well however since the first time finding it open I have made a point to slam it and check the latch.

I am an IT guy. I can certainly go to radio shack and make a decent alarm to tell me when the gate opened. I am also considering cameras. We already have a security system with wireless sensors. I am thinking about putting one on the gate in a pelican case.

How else might I secure the perimeter?

I don't want to put a lock on the gate as we use it constantly. It's a 6' fence do you could only lock it from one side. Also it's the path of least resistance. I would like to know when it opens vs someone hopping the fence. It's a good early warning.

Any thoughts? My wife is a stay at home mom so this has her very uneasy. Also I travel internationally for work sometimes for weeks.

It's very nerve racking knowing someone might be prowling around your house... Especially when your 5000 miles away.

My prowlers are usualy 4 legged, But I use a trail cam. It gives me a good pic of what ever uses the trail behind my house. A camera thats attached to your security systen would probably make more sense in your case tho. a silent allarm and the ability to see whats out there from the safety of the house would be the ticket! Good idea on the trail cam/camera - supplement it with one of those driveway alarms

If this was my situation I would install a night vision wireless camera. I did this for overall protection back in May. Picked up a two unit set which you can have record to a location offsite like icloud etc. Around 200.00 and well worth it. It also shows on a monitor inside your home as well.

IMO, this will put a stop to any shenanigans. It will show you how and why if it continues. But the main idea is to stop anything before it has a chance to happen. Even set of an alarm. When an intruder sees the red ring of led night lights around the lens he will go somewhere else. Almost instant 24hr protection without much effort. If he is not just dumb but dumber then at least you will have his actions on a feed for proof of his wrong doing. You are the IT guy, so I am sure you are way smarter than me. They even have systems where you can watch from anywhere you are. In the old days we put locks on things just to keep honest people honest. More difficult situations and world now.

My goal would not be catching someone unless forced to but to stop any harm before it happens. Let us know what you do and what happens. Hopefully you find it is just a stray Rottweiler or something non threatening.

Im thinking either a four footed critter or some kid pranking you for laughs.

Doesnt make much sense for anyone to just leave a gate open repeatedly unless there is livestock or something to let out by doing that. Im assuming since you dont lock it the gate itself isnt protecting anything other than a passive barrier for privacy.

Reset the anchor fence post that the gate hangs on = so it will not sag on the lock. Install a two sided key lock. I love mine. I also have a top and bottom latch on my one gate. It is hard to get into my private area, but even harder to get out.

Also, before you go all camera and high tech - install motion sensor lights in a series. One is great, three on different sensors are a very obvious message.......... Use odd angles, like one straight down from your roof eaves (which also puts the bulbs out of reach for knocking out).

How about just locking it...or, put a chain and lock around it?
You can chain lock it on BOTH sides so it can be opened from either side...two smaller chains and two locks...two identical keys.
    Actually a pretty simple fix.

If you are going to go through that much effort............ you might as well just fix the sagging post/gate and put a more aesthetically pleasing and easier to use solution in place. My wife likes the fact that she can use a key, without lifting chains. She did make me stop putting up razor wire, however I did use anti-pigeon spikes which will work almost as well as a visual and physical deterrent.

Not much effort to using a chain to lock the gate...

Make sure the gate is self latching with a good stiff spring, as you would on a gate near a swimming pool. And make sure the area on both sides of the gate is covered by a wide field of view motion activated flood light. That should keep pranksters away and critters or the wind from opening the gate.

You do not live with 'my' wife, Sir. And I'm not knocking her in any way, shape or form with this comment. She just does not like it when I take short cuts, and she lets me know it! God Bless her. And I love her, even if she has higher standards. LOL (why she lowered her standards and married me is still a question to be answered................just sayin)

I know you said you don't want the hassle of a lock because you use the gate constantly. But let me ask you something - is it more important that your gate is more convenient, or that people stay out of your yard? Get a lock. And get a camera. And next time, file a police report. Even if it doesn't lead to anything, it creates a paper trail showing that it has happened multiple times. Then when you catch the bast--..jerk on camera, it might help out.

Place a large "BEWARE OF DOG" sign on the fence and lock it. A little inconvenience will be worth the peace of mind. And file a police report to document what's happening.

You and your family should be prepared for the worst-case scenario should a home invasion occur. This is nothing to mess with...take action now!
