I love my dogs to no end. I would however expect my big boy to be shot if he tried to attack someone. My answer to the OP yes the real question is why not

I love dogs but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot one that was mauling a person. What other option is there if you have a gun and a dog(s) are intent on killing.

If they touch me or my dog, I'm shooting them. Before that, 17% OC. Unfortunately this is not a theoretical for me (except the shooting part) as I am harassed by off-leash dogs on my runs 3x/week. I tried to stun-gun one once but he got pretty scared of the lightning. Then I got the OC.

Barking dog = loud commands (or possibly ignore) and eye contact + move out of the area

Agressive dog = OC spray and loud commands + move out of the area and contact authorities

    Mauling/biting dog = dead dog...'nuff said...

    Yes.

"The dog’s owner may face charges, the newspaper said." Several years ago near here a similar fatal attack occurred. The owner who let them out got a few years in prison.
