Just another reason to be armed – mother and daughter killed in daytime home invasion

This news report :Police: Westfield house was invaded before homicides describes how a mother and daughter were killed during a daytime home invasion in Westfield, Indiana. They were killed by blunt force, apparently by only one attacker, although no one knows for sure at this point. --- Edit - there must have been more than one, because the car was driven a few streets away, and the area is too rural for him to have not driven his own car to the house.

This is reported as happening in a very quiet town, in a very quiet area of that quiet town. It appears to be random. They know who did it because the genius used their bank cards just a bit later and was caught on security cameras.

Ladies, you cannot rely on having your husband around to always protect you and your children. The first line of defense is keeping your doors locked and not opening them for anyone you don’t know. The next line of defense is a close-at-hand or on-your-body firearm.

On your body is best. At all times.

If someone breaks into your house you may not spring into action and run to grab a gun. You may be paralyzed from fright at first, but still be able to draw a gun a lot faster than getting your stuff together enough to run for one.

It happens. More than most of us "macho" guys and gals want to think it does.

Even if you do spring into action while casting steely eyed gazes at the invaders, with no fear at all. Simply they will get to you before you get to your gun if its much more than two arms lengths way facts of life kick in and take the sproing out your spring. Much better on body at home. And out.

Id be happier with the no license needed policy that the 2A sets forth. And forcing Congress to repeal the laws that go against the 2A as written instead of botching up a new one.

Then we dont have to get feds foot in the door on another level they dont have any business involving themselves in.

Just heartbreaking...this family is really involved in the church where I used to be a pastor. So sad. Evil truly does live among us. Thus, be prayerful and be prepared.

I pity the fool who tries that to us. I carry on body in the house, or on a chair within arm's length. I know it can happen quickly any time of the day or night. I do live in a gated community and never been a problem, but there's always a first time. I do have a minor concern about adequate backstop so I'll try to shoot up to down or down to up - the houses are close here.

Much empathy to those killed in the OP's story and their loved ones. May the BG be caught and dealt with accordingly.

Stories like this are awful. I try to drive home the importance of being armed at all times with my wife. She is good about keep her gun on her at home, but it's difficult to get her to take it with her. Mostly because she works at a prison and can't have it in the car while she is at work. Sometimes these stories can motivate her, sometimes they cause paranoia.

To me it drives home the point that there are truly few totally safe places anymore.

Unfortunately, the prevailing attitude of people I've spoken with about heinous crimes like this is usually something like, "How awful, I'm thankful I don't live near a neighborhood like that, it won't happen to me". Idea being, they believe they're safe and secure as they go about their daily lives. They have a fine community police department there to "protect & serve" and things like this always happens to other people.

Until something tragic like this happens that hits close to home, seems like many people are in denial of the facts of life. We have millions of violent felons in prison, released and on parole, tens of thousands of violent gang-bangers, a host of druggies that will do anything for their next fix, and who knows how many violent mentally ill people out there wondering around?

These days if you think you're completely safe, even in your own home, your deceiving yourself.

God bless the victims family and friends.

Carrying on your person is at home is probably of secondary importance vs insuring your home has good physical security. The story doesn't make it clear whether there was forced entry (implication was no; maybe the killer was allowed in) but access control is the big issue. Don't open a door to strangers without a good reason. Make sure the door, deadbolt and door jamb are strong enough to withstand a beating. If someone can get through the door with a single kick then you'd better have the gun in your hand already. Obviously a firearm should be close to hand but that's not a substitute for proper defense-in-depth.

All homes should have perimeter sensors, they are cheap and they will give you a directional alarm to buy you at least a 10 second warning before the invasion.

Oldpsufan, I agree an they are so cheap, the chamberlain company has a great one that sells on ebay for 69.00 . If you do not have it get it. Just a little black box that stays in your home an a wireless sensor that you mount outside it has a 600 ft range an shoots a invisible beam 88' anything crosses it the box beeps giving you a nice warning. The box can work with up to four sensors.

How horrible. My condolences to the family.

There are many layers of security that come before your firearm. For example, I have really annoying neighbors that have 12 children, and they know EVERYTHING that we do. Their sons are "working on their cars" (that's pronounced drinking beer, smoking, and chatting up girls) from 6 am to midnight every day. You'd have to get past them in order to approach my door. Dogs are nice too. They don't stop serious threats, but bad guys looking for an easy target may be scared off. I have cameras all around the house with warnings that you're being monitored and the URL of the web site that I stream the video to. Security isn't hard, but it's pretty boolean. You care or you don't.
