Chris Costa on shotgun vs. handgun for home defense

I like the way he makes his case. Agree or not, I believe this is a good example of how to argue your point. That said, I think he's on to something here.

When I saw the title I thought it would be a good laugh to hear Bob Costas talk to us about guns.

Ditto! I, too, thought the OP just left off the "s."

He does make a good argument. My bedside is a 1911 with an 870 standing by if needed.
House layout and alarms/lights, etc. would determine it for me. It's all about how much time you really have.
Did I mention have a plan and practice...

G21 with an X300 and Leopold RDS is my night gun. I think he hit the nail on the head. Sometimes I just put a G21 mag in my G30 with its night sights - green front and orange rear - also makes it easy to see the sights, but no light. I keep a surefire by the bed anyway.

I don't have kids at home and I don't like lights or cans on my home-defense gun which is also a daily carry gun. My nightstand gun is a 1911 with night-sights. There are long guns including 12 gauge shotguns loaded with #1 buckshot available if needed.

I totally agree with his thinking in almost every aspect.

I am not going to walk around clearing my house. They have to come up stairs to the 2nd floor and a 20 ft. hallway to get to me, when the reach the head of the stairs they are in the kill zone. My wife is on the floor, behind the bed dialing 911, I am prone at the bedroom door with my shotgun. I have an alarm system and a dog that barks at noises.

With long guns available, my M&P45 with a TLR-1 has been my home defense firearm of choice. Before that it was an HK USP .45 with a TLR-2. For me to use a long gun for home defense, thing have to gone very, very bad.

I can't even imagine, but isn't prone, with a shotgun, fairly painful?

My thought was unless it's an auto loader , racking the slide could be slow and awkward also.
