When seconds count, police are only... 1,200 miles away !!!

Woman in Minneapolis calls 911, reaches NY operator

...instead of being connected to the Minneapolis 911 operator located less than two miles from her apartment, Lewis’ call was sent 1,200 miles away to New York.

“I was like, ‘I live in Minneapolis,’” Lewis said. “And she’s like, ‘Oh, you dialed 911 in New York.’”

She tried making the call again two minutes later, only to be met with the same result.

While all this was happening, the man who was trying to enter Lewis’ home had made his way down the hall, knocking and attempting to enter other apartments.

Am presuming that was a minor case of "fat fingering" during data entry, typing in the incorrect area code in the setup tables for the phone system in question.

Foul up a hospital's system, and you can get dead patients.
Foul up a phone system, and you can get failure to help citizens in need.

Mine does, now and then. Roughly as frequently as my fat-fingering occurs.

This is also a problem with voip lines, things like happy jack, and these bundle packages. The fine print will tell you that 911 may not be enabled and you will NOT reach a local operator.

On the upside, any inactive cell phone, or land line without service will still allow emergency calls. So if you house has a phone jack you can hook up any phone & it will go to your local 911 operator.

In my area, "no service" on a land line usually means "no dialtone" at the very least. The normal procedure is for them to disconnect the wires up on the pole so they can nail you another $500 on the reconnect fee.

If you make a call from inside your home, like Lewis did, the cell phone signal does not always have a clear path. This makes it possible for a call to skip cell phone towers and bounce to a different state, according to the CBS Minnesota report.
That doesn't make any sense, in the slightest.

    Don't dial 911. Dial 1911.
Firing a suppressed is on my Bucket List.

I'm just a spoke in the wheel but not a big deal.
