Cool Trick From My Blind Uncle

I helped my uncle who is blind move into his new place today and he did something I never noticed he had before.

Once we got his stuff settled in, he went around to all of the windows with "mini-blinds" in them and attached a small wind chime onto the slats of the window's blinds.

I knew why he did it and it got me thinking about doing it at my home.
If you are in another part of the house and hear the wind chimes clanging you know something is either trying to leave or come through a window. Especially good in summer or spring when the window may be open in the day time and you have part of the blinds closed.

Just though I would pass this along.

And by the way, he has a Remington semi-auto 12 gauge with 0-buck in it. (no one else lives in his house) he figured if an intruder is coming down the hall at night/day, and he blasted a few of those rounds off, he didnt need to see, but he was almost guaranteed a hit.

What if the wind makes the chimes ring?

No, only 50% of the actual window opens.

So, the small wind chimes are on the upper part of the blinds that only cover the window thats NOT open.

If I was related I would not only call before I got in range,I would be whistling all the way up to the door so he knew it was me

No need for that, just dont enter through the window.

I know it sounds like what he does is a bit extreme. But he had to find ways to survive since he worked for 30 years in the violent city of Baltimore. (he chose NOT to go on tax payers disability)

What is tax payers disability? Did he not pay any FICA during his 30 years employment?

Wow... I'm not sure what to say about this. I'm glad he wants to take care of himself, and I'm sure he is capable of doing so but his figuring is way off base and a dangerous of thinking. He is not almost guaranteed anything. Shotguns are not some magical hallway clearing weapons, especially withtypical indoor distances.

Have you ever watched a blind hanging from a a window when the wind blows? Even if the lower half only is open, the wind still catches and moves the entire blind. Now, if your uncle doesnt open windows, thats fine and not a bad idea at all. If he likes to air out the house on nice days, he might be asking for trouble.

I'd introduce him to some inexpensive alarms sold at any home improvement store or even Walmart. There are a number of different kinds, some that are motion driven others are magnetic contacts.

BTW, a shotty with 0 buck will not have that much spread in a typical indoor environment.

yep...even at 10 - 15 feet (which is where a threat engagement is likely to happen in your home) the pattern couldnt be more than 4 inches, right?

Aaand i would be REALLY worried about the neighbors. Buck COULD go through a wall or two.
