It don't take long to get trough a door getting into a safe to get your gun well i don't know i don't keep all my guns in a safe and if the bad guys get in before you can get your gun and see a safe they might hold a gun to your head and want the combanition and get all your guns, next time someone kicks on my doors i will shoot frist and ask questions later, it took the bad guys less then 3 mins, to get thru 2 doors and half way thru a deadbolt before i got the drop on them, it happened to me i hope don't happen to you! the cops never caught them.
Out of sight in a Gun vault, in my bedroom.
With two small children it is imho safer to secure it at night.
Mine stays out of reach of my three kids but close enough to get to in seconds. Plus we also have a dog that barks at EVERYTHING giving me plenty of time to prepare.
This comment might be better in a diff post but I think everyone should own a dog for a heads-up security alarm. A door or window alarm going off AFTER a break in is too late.
At my appartment during the week, on the bed. Weekends at home both the wife and I have them on our night stands.
I voted my gun is kept obscured from view in an open dresser drawer I can reach from bed.
I just saw a sweet bag on You Tube unveiled by Eagle Industries at the 2010 Shot Show called the Home Defense Bag.
It mounts between mattress and box springs of bed and holds the usual stuff. Gun, Magazine, Flashlight, Cell Phone. But it has a handles and a shoulder strap so you can grab it, sling it over your shoulder and take it with you if you need to clear your house or whatever.
It's not listed in their new products line-up on Eagle's website yet, but you can see the You Tube video here. It's the last item he reviews on the video.
It's also recommended as something you can take with you on the road for use in your hotel room.
I've toyed around with the idea of keeping my gun in that manner but never gotten any of the commercially available set-up's on the market before, but I kind of like the looks of this one by Eagle. I may pick one up when they become available.
Under the pillow is a No Go for me. I'm such a restless and fitful sleeper, I would probably wake up with the gun on the floor 5 days out of 7.
Top drawer of chest of drawers on my side of the bed at night (otherwise on me). It does necessitate me getting up.
Before I had a fifteen month old son who LOVES to explore I slept with guns very close and, yes, a few times I did sleep with a 1911 under the pillow.. especially when my husband was away.
Before the Speedloader was born we both had our EDC guns on top of the night stands, out of the holsters, just ready to grab and shoot plus we each had a shotgun just resting against out own sides of the bed. Since the safe was in our room, every morning before we left for work we'd secure our carry guns on our bodies and the shotguns in the safe.
Now, however, we have a little boy would would love nothing more than to touch anything he hasn't already gotten to touch.
The guns get put into drawers that he can't yet reach, inside of holsters.
The shotguns are locked away.

Both my wife and I have put our carry weapons on the nightstand on our side of the bed. The shotguns, AR's and a couple of handguns are in the unlocked bedroom safe. All guns are loaded and chambered. The rest of our guns are on the their place throughout the house or in the locked gunsafe
I've got a pistol safe mounted to the back of my nightstand. I leave it open at night with the handle of the gun sticking out for easy access. I can reach it with ease from my lying position in bed.
I have a mossberg 500, a mavrick 88, and glock 23 within reach.
Another vote for gunvault near the bed
