This is a great book. It breaks down concealed carry and personal defense very well. I have read a few books on this topic and I still took away a lot from this book. For $12, it's well worth the price.

While I've ready many books on my Nook and on the Nook app for iPad, this was both my first iBooks read as well as my first interactive book. The charts, videos, and illustrations were helpful and interesting. My overall favorite chapter is chapter 6 on "The Physiology of Violent Encounters." Your way of describing the brain activities that occur when a human is under stress were easy to understand and thought provoking. I was actually working in the yard with my wife and three year old daughter yesterday and found myself discussing the paths from the Thalamus to the Motor Cortex via both the Amygdala and the Sensory Cortex. Not standard yard work discussion, but, it had captivated me enough to bring it up to my wife. The "reviews" at the end of the chapters were very useful, too. I found myself, starting on chapter 2, reading more carefully once I realized that there would be a test. The high speed camera videos were just plain cool. The sections on firearm operations and accessories were not new information for me, but I can see how a beginner would find it very useful. I wish I had owned a book like this when I first started shooting.

Thank you, Michael, for writing this and sharing it with me. I will highly recommend it to others.

Thanks Adam, those are GREAT comments! Chapter six is also my favorite chapter - the topics around the automated responses that can occur under stress were inspired by Rob Pincus and his research on the topic. Rob was not only a huge help in directing me toward great resources on that topic, he also helped to fine tune my description of a number of range drills in the last chapter, and he was the inspiration behind our "simple versus complex" approach in the chapter on shooting fundamentals. I haven't gone as far as having a conversion with my wife and kids about how the brain's structures interact, but I do find myself thinking, "There goes my amygdala," anytime I have an automated response to anything, like flinching when I hear a loud "bang."

Thanks also to everyone who has given us a five-star rating in the iBookstore (or through iTunes). We're slowly creeping up the ranking chart in the iBookstore, in fact, out of 1781 interactive books (books that would include video and other interactive elements), we're currently sitting at #31. We have selfish reasons for wanting the book to get into the top ten, but you have to admit that it would be pretty cool if Apple started promoting a firearm book on the front page of the iBookstore . For those of you who use iTunes on your computer, you can give the book a five-star rating by finding it in iTunes (just search on "concealed carry" and the iBook will appear in the #1 spot), and clicking on the stars to rate it. With dozens of five-star ratings and keeping sales strong, we might just break through into the top ten!

I am about half finished with the book. The interactive parts are really good. I have read several books on I-Pad but this is the first interactive one. As I told Michael any book that quotes Jeff Cooper is worth reading.

Hey mfcmb, I gave away just ten free copies this time around (which were eaten up pretty quickly), but you can download a sample of the book to check it out before you buy. The sample contains about 15% of the complete book, but it will give you a real taste of the interactivity, and a sample of each chapter (including the complete introduction). On the iPad 3, the photos are amazing - nearly every single image I used in the iBook was sized to take advantage of the retina display (which is one reason why the book is nearly a gigabyte), and many of the images end up looking like they're almost three dimensional.

I prefer to use the Kindle app on my iPad, any chance there will be a Kindle version?

kapnketel that's in the works, but it won't be as interactive as the iPad edition (not because we're not trying hard, but because Kindle doesn't support that level of interaction yet). You guys will be the first to hear about it when it's ready to go!

Will you be doing a "book on tape" version for those of us who are legally blind?

    Michael -

I really like the added step that you show with the woman. She orders verbally and with her hand to stop! Too many times I have seen the flow go to scan , unholster, present and go / no go. The major disadvantage with it IMO is a somewhat distant bystander may well see and say " He pulled the gun out and shot him..." Not hearing a verbal command or seeing a knife in a Bad guys hand. The additional hand signal is very clear even at a distance.

Thanks Happypuppy. One of the things I tried to stress in that section (and in class) is that in many cases, we have options beyond "draw, present, bang." That isn't to say that in some situations, things will escalate so quickly those exact steps are the ONLY choice. Something else I tried to stress in that series of images (and I repeated in the quiz) was in an attempt to solve a problem I was seeing in how some students perceived what they were hearing in class. The instructor might make a statement something to the effect of, "If you draw your gun, you need to be prepared to use it," but what the student might have heard was, "If you draw your gun, you MUST use it." On a side note, the model in that series of photos (and in the "color codes of awareness" section) was my wife, so she was very helpful in getting those images correct.

    Thanks kapnketel!

For those of you still interested in the iPad edition, I'll repost how to find it here. If you'd like to purchase it through iTunes, you can find it here:

iTunes - Books - Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals by Michael Martin

Or from your iPad, open the iBooks app, and search for "concealed carry." Our book, Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals, will be in the number one spot. If you're not ready to buy but you'd like to check it out first, you can download a sample which will give you about 15% of the entire book including the complete introduction and samples from each chapter.

For another sneak peek, here is the video that launches when the book opens:

    Thanks again kapnketel!
