A Mexican national accused of involvement in drug trafficking was killed in a struggle with a Border Patrol agent Wednesday night near the banks of the Rio Grande in south Laredo, officials said.
Neither the deceased's name nor the agent's had been released as of Friday.

Dr. Corinne Stern, Webb County medical examiner, said the deceased was 36. She performed the autopsy Thursday but wouldn't release the cause and manner of death, citing the ongoing investigation.

Laredo Fire Department spokesman Eloy Vega said paramedics found the man dead with a single gunshot wound to the upper body.

After the shooting, the Laredo Police Department, FBI and other state, local and federal agencies coordinated the first response and initiated an investigation.

Jason Darling, Border Patrol spokesman, would not say if the agent was back on patrol or had been assigned to other duties. According to police spokesman Joe E. Baeza, an agent on routine patrol came across several men who allegedly crossed the Rio Grande illegally. Baeza said the men tried to smuggle 260 pounds of marijuana packaged in bundles.

“When the suspects saw the agent, they absconded,” he added, but the agent caught up with one man, and Baeza said they struggled until “the agent discharged his service weapon issued to him by Homeland Security and hit the suspect once in the upper torso.”

The agent did not sustain serious injuries. The other men swam back across to Mexico. Laredo police seized the marijuana.

Residents in the area said they heard several gunshots.

A woman, 55, who asked not to be identified, said she was outside her house and heard six shots.

Sounds like the have a courageous officer willing to go up against SIX smugglers known to be up to no good, and could have possibly been armed with guns and or knives.
    He should get decorated.
They will probably bring him up on charges of killing an unarmed, poor soul , brought down by his impoverished societal upbringing.
If that happens, all the border agents need to just walk off their posts in protest.
Sooner or later its going to happen to them

Very courageous act on the part of the agent. I'm hoping the investigation turns out everything was above board. It's too bad there's not enough funding to allow the USBP agents to patrol in teams of at least two. Seems like it's pretty dangerous down there at night. My wife's cousin is an agent in NM, formerly in TX. He's got some amazing stories.

The second page of the article on the link from the OP said several BP vehicles and sherrif's units were responding. It sounded to me as if he was immediately involved with the suspects, with help arriving right after the shooting.
It also stated that he appeared to have a bandaged leg, when the whole thing ended and they were coming out of the brush.

Why does our government spend so much time investigating our border agents when they must shoot some to save their own lives, but so little time (or no time) investigating the dope peddlers invading our country?

Our recent history regarding Border Patrol Officers is not very good. There were two BP Officers involved in a shooting which to any reasonable person was justified, and both BP Officers went to jail as a result of this incident.

It is a risky and truly thankless position. One of the toughest in law enforcement.

I sure hope he did all his paperwork correctly and truthfully, so he doesn't get railroaded.

+1 on that... But there's still the "Unarmed Mexican National" part of the equation.

More than just even odds they'll charge the BPA and have the smugglers buddies come to testify against him, given full immunity and free border passes, of course.

Man, I really hope I'm wrong. I hope updates get posted soon.

Mean border agent shoots undocumented worker just doing the job Americans won't do........bringing 260# of pot in. Do you know how hard it is to swim with a 260# bale on your back?
I'd say the agent is in big trouble.
