    Those police benefit phone calls

I got a call from someone today whose caller ID came up as Police Publications, 706-855-5605, trying to sell ad space to benefit our local police department and in return I would get those spiffy stickers to put on my vehicle. Aren't these usually scams that have nothing to do with the police department?

That sounds scammy. Searching that number turns up only personal owners.

I get a letter once a year, signed by our Sheriff that I respond to with a contribution. And yes, I do get a spiffy "don't pull me over" sticker. It must work?

I doubt if the police see much of that money if any. It's usually a scam.

those certainly are often scams, but not always. local places will often call around christmas but i certainly would never give them anything that way. if u want to donate to the local departments then write them a check

Call your local Police and Sheriff's offices. I'm betting a scam. I know of none that solicit funds over the phone.

They did a local expose on those organizations several years ago. The police departments do get some money, but it's pennies on the dollar.

    Not a good investment, imo.

Almost all of those marketing organizations are scams. Usually the police organization gets less than 10 percent of the take.

I got one of those calls But they didn't ask for money over the phone. I asked if I would like them to send out a packet of information. (still waiting for it to come.)

I am a member of FOP and my former lodge did this very kind of marketing. It was relatively lucrative. We used all proceeds for community organizations. Bicycle helmets for kids, "clinical demos" of proper installation of car seats for little ones, Babe Ruth and Pop Warner teams, etc. Just contact the local agency they are supposedly repping for to see if they are legit then donate if you feel necessary.

Quite a few agencies and FOP lodges use this kind of marketing. The contract company gets a percentage and the sponsoring agency gets a cut to use for their projects. I feel sorry for the people, especially the older people, who either think that having the sticker will someday get them out of a ticket, or worse if they don't give, the police will be looking for them to give them a ticket. Neither is true in any agency I know. I never give to telephone solicitors. But if you have doubts contact your local department before you give.

Regardless, I NEVER give my info over the phone on an incoming call. True to form, I asked for the info to be faxed and of course, nothing. I had the same call a couple years ago and they actually did mail the info package, but it was nothing like they made it sound like over the phone.

I support my police force directly. Good to know my suspicions were most likely correct.

Ask them to send you 'some paperwork'...

I never contribute to ANY organization on an incoming call...never!
