You have got to read this story...

Few people survive stepping on an improvised explosive device. Even fewer walk away the same day after directly absorbing the force of the blast, but Garst did just that.

That's my old AO, Lima 3/3 relieved us about two months ago. He's lucky the whole thing didn't detonate. There was a NY times article in about Jan about a guy in my company who stepped on an IED and only the detonators (not the main charge) went off, and that would have been within probably 15 miles of this spot. He is awfully lucky, those IEDs in that area can get nasty.

Some are good. Some are lucky. I'll take lucky, every time.

"My first thought was, ‘Oh s---, I just hit an IED,’” he said. “Then I thought, ‘Well I’m standing. That’s good.’
Garst’s squad stared at him in disbelief. The square-jawed Marine has a tendency to be short-tempered, and the realization that the blast was meant to kill him spiked his adrenaline and anger.

“It ****** me off,” he said.

Haha, I like this guy's mindset and style!

Not to hijack, but I was watching "History's Mysteries" last night. They were trying to track down a soldier's relatives so that another soldier's relative could tell them about an act of heroism documented in a letter home. The author of the letter is still MIA. The soldier had jumped on a grenade in Korea. Turns out he survived and lived to marry and have kids. 100% disability, 10% for 10 different body areas perforated. So the MIA's daughter (who was not quite born when her Dad got MIAed) got to thank the hero's son. Bittersweet.
