Went from bad to worse with the verdict

I have been working a double murder trial for the last 3 weeks which is ending today.
The judge had ordered extra security during the trial which has put a drain on our resources, due to both of the families of the murder victims are present, and were gang members.
Now we were ordered to increase our numbers from 3 to 8 officers in the courtroom.
As I write this they are arguing on directions for the jury for a sentencing verdict.
The family wants him dead, and the gang wants him dead. After this is over, it will be my job to escort him safely back to the jail, with just 2 other officers. I really wish our vehicles were bullet proof.
At least I have a plan.
I don't mind putting myself out there to protect an innocent person, but it's kinda hard when you know you are protecting a murdering thug from other thugs.
    Anybody have any similar experiences?
All comments welcome as it keeps my mind occupied while waiting.

Good luck to you. Sometimes I feel street justice is a good thing, but then some innocents get involved and....

Not fun, but I trust you will do what the job requires.
Any chance of mutual aid help?
I never was assigned to Court Services, so I never had that particular problem.

Look at it this way; You are not protecting the thug, you are protecting rule of law and society in general.

Sixto, in our line of work, we see enough to convince me that all law abiding citizens be armed at all times.

Not much help for you today, but there are companies out there that have armored vehicles that will do prisoner transports on a contract basis. Might be worth keeping a number in the ol' rolodex for the future.

I protect Congressmen on a pretty regular basis, so I know about protecting thugs!

Stay alert, stay safe, and remember - it isn't the person, it's the institution. Good luck.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Our SRT team on occasion would do "plain clothes" courtroom security in a couple of the higher profile cases. The court bailiff's and jail staff handled the prisoner directly and our job was to have eyes on the crowd in the courtroom and outside when going to and from transfer vehicle. If possible you should have one or more just watching the crowd outside the court house. We never had any incidents but the potential was there.

Ironically, it seems whenever our court had an incident, it was prisoners acting out during routine cases when no extra security was assigned.

We are fortunate we have mutual aid to include the sheriff's SRT if needed. Stay safe bro !

Protecting thugs from thugs? I worked as a Corrections Officer for a while after I retired from the Army, and trying to keep the thugs from killing other thugs was business as usual. Of course that was 2nd priority as 1st priority was trying to keep them from killing us.
