This is why I always thought it was short sighted to drop the battle ships. They have heavy armor, BIG guns, and can be fitted with any anti missile system we can come up with.
The carriers, like the battleships can be taken out easily. The carriers in particular are on the verge of being obsolete due to technolgical advances in weaponry. Back in the day when the ocean was a big place and they could hide, they served a purpose. With sattlelite and GPS technology, now there is no where to hide.
A couple of well placed missles can take out any ship made.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.

Reminiscent of the Cold War.
The best way to defeat this missile is to destroy the ability to launch it or the nodes that provide it targeting data. Both are tall orders but you can rest assured the Navy takes the DF-21D very seriously, just like they take every weapon specifically designed to target aircraft carriers very seriously. (10 years ago the fear was from a surface launched cruise missile the PLA-N had acquired called the Sunburn) Every where a carrier goes it has at least 1 AEGIS platform that rides shotgun on it and I can only imagine if a carrier were operating in the East or South China Sea in a conflict wth the PLA/PLA-N there'll be multiple AEGIS platforms around to protect it but the best way to defeat this thing is to keep it in the tube blind or destroy it in place.
BTW, you dont have to sink a carrier to defeat it, just destroy it's ability to launch and recover aircraft. If one of these were to make it through the umbrella that ship, if it didn't sink, would be out of the fight indefinitely.
Carriers aren't on the verge of obsolescence, there's still no other capability that can put 40-60 tactical strike aircraft 100 miles offshore of any ocean accessable country in 2-4 days. A carrier off the shores of your country still makes belligerent dictators nervous at night with good reason.
