Raw Video: Man Holds Store Clerk Hostage At Knifepoint
A young convenience-store clerk in southeastern New Brunswick was held hostage at knifepoint for three hours Sunday before a captor released her and police apprehended a man.
RCMP responded to a hold-up alarm at a convenience store in Lakeville, N.B., around 9:15 a.m., RCMP Corporal Marie Beaudry said.
Nearing the end of a standoff, video footage shows a man yelling at police outside a Kwik- More..Way convenience store with a knife gripped in one hand and his other arm wrapped around the young woman’s neck.
The man released the clerk outside the store around noon and bolted behind the building, knife still in hand, with several officers and a police dog in pursuit.
Police arrested a man in a wooded area behind the store a few minutes later.
A negotiator, the RCMP’s emergency response team, a police dog team and several officers were on the scene during the standoff, Cpl. Beaudry said.
It’s not clear why the man barricaded himself in the store with the woman, she said.
The clerk wasn’t injured, but she was given the opportunity to speak with a nurse and a counsellor, Cpl. Beaudry said.
No one else was in the store at the time.
A 24-year-old Moncton man is in custody, Cpl. Beaudry said. The man was not identified pending charges.
