    Police Academy Graduate

I have a buddy in Georgia who has an 18 year old son. His son (I will call him Jim for this post) has been into hunting, fishing, outdoor sports all his life. The boy can shoot. I've seen a video of him taking out a milk jug from a half mile away with an AR (I believe it was an AR). He was home schooled.

Anyway... he has been attending the Regional Police Academy in his area. When they first started, the rest of the guys in his class, some whom are jailers and already in law enforcement, gave him a hard time. The instructor told him that they have "never" had an 18 year old to graduate.

It was rough for him the first week. He had to retake one of the tests and it kinda made him feel like he wouldn't make it. Then came range day.

He didn't even use his own weapon, and shot a 300. They told him that only 3 people have ever done that. He was the third. He took "Top Gun" for his class.

The guys started treating him differently after that. Anyway, few more weeks of class, he has made it through with no problems and is now the first 18 year old to be graduating from that Police Academy.

He has a good head on his shoulders. I'm real proud to know him and I know he will make a good cop.

I just wanted to share this with the forum.

Wow. An 18 year old LEO? Huh. I always thought that 21 was the minimum age? Sounds like a good guy though, and wish him the best with his new career!

Smaller towns and villages will sometimes hire an LEO at 18; he'll probably have to volunteer his time in exchange for experience and holding his commission until he is 21.

Sounds like he did a good job at the Academy. I seriously doubt, however, that an 18 year old has the maturity or experience to be an LEO. JMO.

I was a reserve constable at 18. The running joke was that if we had to check out a bar, I'd have to wait outside.

Wish him all the best from me.

Good for him...as a juvenile/adult probation officer, I dont run in to many juveniles/teenagers that I have hopes for changing the world in a good way. Good to see one who may.

Don't know how he ranked in class but scored high 80s on most his tests, and was in the running for top cadet. His credentials and application are headed Monday to the Sheriff for consideration. Being delivered by a friend who is on the force. The Sheriff had already heard of his range score and made the comment to let him know how he finishes. Looks like he may have a job with his local Sheriff's office by the end of next week.

Sixto, this is not a small town or village. One of the largest metropolitan cities in Georgia and a county Sheriff's office.

He has bigger goals. This for him, is just a foot in the door.

Good luck to him, I hope he gets on. He'll be able to retire young!
