I've always wondered about the authority that University cops have. Are they glorified security guards or can they really arrest you and have you prosecuded the same as a normal LEO or what?

It depends on the university or college. For example, University of Missouri (GO MIZZOU!) cops are fully sworn LEO as are those at the University of Texas but some other colleges just have armed security guards.

I can not speak for all University Police Departments but Duke Police Department has all the duties and responsibilities as any city. Most of Dukes campus is in Durham and I believe (this may not be entirely correct) that Duke and Durham have a shared jurisdiction in and around Duke. Duke also has a Security force both armed and unarmed that is employed by the Police Dept but only works under 74-C.

This sounds like a procedural violation used as a means to an end.

And many, many schools, like the one where I got my BS, have unarmed "security" which is nothing more than a paid neighborhood watch.

    Thanks for the clarification Guantes.

Guantes, if I may ask, is your pic a real pic of you back in the day or one you just found somewhere?

In TX, they are sworn LEOs.
Sounds like there is more to it than is reported. Wonder if he wasn't on the Super High Intensity Training List at work???

Ditto. My school's "security" where I got my degree is unarmed as well.

That pic is in fact yours truly, East L.A., circa 70', the day after a riot, doing an intersection control, meal relief.
