What options are there available for our military personnel on leave to defend themselves?

They had every option available for self defense that anyone else in their position would have had. There is nothing in the UCMJ that says you can't defend yourself. I carried (legally, with a Washington permit) off duty (and off post) all the time. Not knowing MO laws, they could also possibly have been able to carry OC, more suitable defensive knives, or whatever.

It sounds like - based on what little info is available - that they were drunk and easily taken advantage of. How the guys got the drop on them, I can't say, but I do know that it's pretty easy to manipulate people when they are very drunk. I also know that Marines are human beings, not supermen, and it's quite possible that two tougher, meaner street punks simply beat up the two who were actively engaged in the fight (the third one? who knows - having an EGA tattoo doesn't magically give you courage, either).
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

    Don't do stupid things.
    Don't hang with stupid people.
    Don't go stupid places.

Looks like they violated at least 2 of these rules to live by. Not saying they deserved what they got, they did not, but they did put themselves in the position to be had.

It's not hard to get your ass kicked as a Marine. I know from experience. But, I will NEVER admit it in person, and NEVER say by whom...I feel better now.... been keeping that secret for years!

LOL. Thank you for admitting it. I know that Marines have some sort of strange Juju religion that the rest of the branches just don't understand, but I've found that they go down just like the rest.

I wasn't a Marine, but I can remember many nights off base with other enlisted men and getting pretty drunk to the point that In the morning I probably wouldn't know if I had my ass kicked by somebody or just fell down a flight of stairs. That's why I leave alcohol alone,I remember stuff better

armies, soldiers....through out history rather meant---kill people and break things.

when did become "fashionable" for a soldier to leave his personal weapon in the barracks when he was off duty?

in fact, i ask---when did it happen that a soldier was commanded to carry an unloaded weapon when in uniform??
if a commander somehow is fearful of having a soldier who will fight and die for their country armed in their presence; than there is something on a more fundamental level that is wrong.

what is the thinking behind 'modern' ....err, thinking?

    +1 OPFOR

if they were in Texas they could get a CHL even at age 18 if active duty no fee to DPS (and usually big discount from the class instructors)
.....but couldn't be intoxicated, which falls back to ksholder's post
