I'm in NY now and on the 11pm news they just showed a NYPD sniper with a Barrett 50 cal resting on a sling in the helicopter! They said these guys were trained by the military to shoot out of a moving helicopter! Have a buddy of mine who was a NYPD armorer RO and he also took the government course!

Sounds about right. They won't allow the citizens the right to protect themselves and walk all over the 2nd amendment like it doesn't exist yet they can spend the peoples hard earned money on expensive training, toys, and weapons to make themselves feel safe. Sounds like our current guberment NYC and them should get along just fine.

The Danger Room article linked earlier indicates its a .50 shooting out of a helicopter at an aircraft. Implication is it's more for light, slower movers than for airliners. I don't see how they could manage an airliner with that set up unless they got a really lucky shot in somewhere.

They could always go to mexico and buy some RPG's or shoulder fired anti aircraft missles that our government sells to the Mexican government who promptly sell them to the cartels...... then blame on US Gun Shops.....

OK, Mythbusters, let's get on this. Can a Barrett BMG .50 cal take down an aircraft, any aircraft. What about a RPV, R/C kit plane. Would you believe a large albatross? :p

They'd be better off mounting ma-deuces in the doors, then spraying-and-praying.

What are the legalities of mounting weaponry onto LEO helos? Can civilian state/local LEO agencies get advanced weaponry like this? Federal LEO agencies? I've never heard of such a thing.

There are none that I know of. As long as the requirements are met for the ownership of the actual weapon, you can mount it on whatever.

Don't need myth busters. I spent 24 years working aircraft maintenance in the Air Force. At the right altitude a flock of pigeons can take down a plane if sucked into the intake. You should see what a duck or geese can do!

I could take down a small airplane with a tube of buck shot or .30-30 if it's within range.

I can usually hit the broad side of a barn too - if it's within range.
There is a solution but we are not Jedi... not yet.
