This was the part I found most interesting. Usually, traffic accidents are the leading cause and have been for some time. The nonprofit group that tracks police deaths also reported that 68 federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire in 2011, a 15 percent jump from last year when 59 were killed. It marks the first time in 14 years that firearms fatalities were higher than traffic-related deaths

Before my retirement all our units had been converted to the latest generation of LED's.
At night after the violator had come to a safe stop I would leave my rear emergency lights activated and my take downs, high beams and spotlight on but would turn my forward facing LED's except for the grill lights off.
I wear corrective lenses and the LED's on the lightbar reflecting off my glasses was very distracting and made it difficult to see well.
Crash scenes needed all the lights left activated for safety and night vision really took a hit then.
Well, no matter what you think of Law Enforcement, it's bad all around when Police murders are up. Ripple effect and all that. In fact, I'm of the opinion that a lot of really nice LEOs and good LEOs are actually the ones getting killed. The VaTech cop was really well-liked. And guys who go into the heat of the situation are often the good guys, the courageous ones.
